Whose L5 does NOT crash?

Hi folks,

I was just wondering, is anybody using L5 (5.01 to 5.02b8) without having ANY troubles and crashes at all? If so, what machine are You running?

I for example have an ibook g4 768Mb and I am getting more and more pissed off the abes!!! L4 was so smooth (also crashed, but only once a month) and L5 is just crap!

Right now I am using the newest beta. Although they seem to be a bit more stable than 5.01, they still crash. It's not some certain bug which freaks me out, it's just unstable in general (copy/paste, select all, insert time, etc let it not reproducible crash) and my .alps take around 15mins to get written! They have 460Mb and I will definetly not send them back.

I had email contact with some guy from the abes, here's his last response:
simply take a look at the changlelogs of the last 7 beta versions, they speak for themselfes :-) Please believe me, our development is really working hard, but good software needs a good amount of testing and debugging and we're not a company with hundreds or thousands of developers. Please be patient and submit experiences in the forum if you come across new ones.
... which pissed me off! The changelogs tell me that the software I paid for had shitloads of bugs. It's not new features which get introduced in 5.02, it's just bug fixes with (so far) 8 betas. Yes, GOOD software needs a good amount of testing and debugging, but BEFORE release! Why did the abes release it too early, why do customers have to test, debug and compensate the lack of developers? I won't be patient, I paid 450€ for using a stable L5 ... NOW!

i know what you mean, it feels like we're still beta testing the software, and frankly it's a bit less than what i've come to expect from the abes. however, i do have to say i've only had a handful of crashes since i went up to 5. i only started using the betas at 7 when a set of mine started crashing whenever i copy and pasted a particular clip. i haven't used arrangement view much though, and maybe i'm not exactly a hardcore user at the moment, but still, thats my experience seeing you asked.

... just being curious:

Well, I started using L4 with version 4.1 or so. Have earlier versions of L4 been unstable as well? Is that maybe the common "good software needs a good amount of testing and debugging CUSTOMERS" ableton strategy?

mine doesn't really crash.

the only time it has was with a VSTi I had made which I knew was a bit dodgy, but loaded it anyway to see what would happen. It was very much not Live's fault.

Pentium M 2ghz, XP home, Indigo DJ, Live 5.01 (no time for betas!)
also on
Pentium 4 2.5ghz, XP pro, Maudio Delta 66

It's normally some combination of plugins and architecture that causes the issues, always hard things for Ableton to check.

Having said that - I do think they shipped early, but it was probably important to their dealings with Maudio & the US market to hit Namm on time.

Mine never crashes.... Have used it quite a lot, but only for producing at home so far. I haven't had the guts to use it for my last week show....

The most iri thing for me is the scrubb behaviour, and the cpu usage.
Live 5 is realy a cpuaholic. en my uad wich is acting weird with ableton.
But i'll have to be patience.

For the rest no crashes.

And there is always sumptin, i am realy glad that the Ableton team is one of those who realy listen to their customers.
Thumbs up.

It could be more worse if u was a Steinberg user, they give shit about their customers.

I agree with you about the final version not having been given enough time in beta, I think that ableton should hopefully try to give the development longer if needed next time before releasing (I suppose its down to some business deadlines).
I respect the fact that ableton has been pretty honest when telling you that they do not have a massive development team...maybe they should get some more people to help keep the software moving forward.
Also as far as I am concerned as long as they continue doing what they are doing (Working very hard removing problems as they are reported) I am not going to hold a grudge.
The fact is Live is a quality piece of software and well worth the money I spent on it.
Ableton seem to be very good with their users (They have replied to almost all my problems very quickly) Alex answers alot of problems on the forums
The only bug I have that really annoys me is the undo.cfg message.
Peace :)

Yes indeed, the initital .0.1 versions of Live 3 and 4 were not the near-perfect applications we have in 3.0.2 and 4.1.4. This inititial release of almost all software is bound to have some bugs. At least ableton follows through and fixes 'em--have you ever used and NI stuff, or tried thier "customer support" . Live is a unique software that people use in MANY different ways--it is not as straight-forwared and linear as other apps, it is way more open-ended. Thus, there is no way their small team of developers and programmers can test hundreds of scenarios and workflows, so they do the beta test. Granted, as others have said, NAAM and other market issues may have forced a bit of an early release, but if the four prior versions have anything to teach us, its that Ableton cares too much about their software to not stay on it and fix the bugs. It just takes time, hopefully you can be patient and help out by posting bugs, if it's too frustrating, I guess stick to 4 and wait a month or two til they get it tightened up. I don't understand how ableton's reply to you "pissed you off", whay did you want them to say????

No crashes for me at all. I'm on PC and couldn't be happier with stability. :)

5 is much more prone to crashes than 4.1.2....things like copy/paste make it happen to me, especially long clips. i have a show in november doing lots of live sampling/field recording processing so i want to take advantage of 5`s routing system, but may settle on 4 just to be safe. i hear the proper 5.0.2 will be out next week, so i hope its sturdier....

The number of crashes I've had with 5 I could count on one hand. But I only have a few cherry picked 3rd party plugs/instruments...no random old version plugs in my .component or VST folders.

The only thing I've noticed is that I get more crackling than I did with 4, even at lower CPU values. It's not very often though. I assume they are working on that.

I'm still trying to figure out the fucking orange dot, but that's another issue altogether. Even though I don't quite understand it yet, it doesn't seem to be getting in the way like it did when I first started using 5.

Well so far it's not crashed on me once. I'm running in on XP pro and have had it running on my Athlon based PC and my cetrino laptop.I usualy use it on my laptop but a recent project was maxing it out so moved to the desktop. A hefty laptop to replace both is underconsideration.

The only time it crashed was when I tried to guitar rig. At times it gets really slow and unusable (to do with plugins - some remain active even when playback is stopped) but otherwise it's been crash free. My problems with it are around how speed of use of the arrange view.
