splitting audio signal

I am trying to split an audio signal to its low, mid and high parts. I am able to use the live routing to send the signal to three different audio tracks. What is the best way to separate the frequency range? I tried to use the EQ Three to separate the frequency for the 3 channels.. It works somewhat but I think it could be better.. does anyone have any ideas on how to do this?? Is the EQ my only choice?

thanks.

EQ 4 is much more flexible and far less CPU intensive. I'm stiill a novice but I'm sure this will do pretty much what you are looking for with customisation.

i use hipass and lowpass filters. (the apple ones don't take up too much cpu on os x)

just keep the resonance down and adjust the frequency to where you need it.
you don't need to run the clip on 2 tracks, just forward the audio to another track (with another filter, then whatever other effects) and set it to monitor.
