Am i doomed?

As Live 2.0 (now .3) offers the ability to record "tape style" I became greedy and wanted to use it as a recording maschine for audio (like songs and scores etc.)
But live seems to be more greedy than me - concerning cpu.

Please help with advice. Situation:

Powerbook 867, 768 MB Ram, 40 GB Harddisk
M-Audio USB Duo sound converter
Reason as a rewire slave

I thought it a good idea to build me a template song, some audio channels for voice, guitar etc., some rewired channels featuring reson instruments (I build a corresponding reason template), 13 tracks altogether, sends for reverb (economy) and delay, a compressor and eq in the master channel . Thought it would be a good point to start from, let creativity fly.
Good idea? Bad idea!
My cpu did not at all manage the load, audio stuttered, the cpu load went over the top - before I recorded much
reason only gradually contributed to the problem - using 13 clips in the live session view showed the same problems. higher buffer setting in the audio preferences did not show much effect
I was really pissed - so was my girlfriend as I staid up all night trying to fix the problem.
Am I doomed?
Can I optimize my settings?
Do I have to look for another audio sequencer?

Hope you find a solution to your situation. I can't help saying that you remind me of a race car driver who harps on the pit crew for not optimizing your car's top speed above what the car's top speed is.

I'm on an 800MHz iMac and know your frustration well. I work with Live, Logic, a smattering of Logic plug-ins, MetaSynth, MetaTrack, etc. My thoughts run this way:

It's excellent that you've felt your fourth wall; your discovery expedition has found it's final destination. Now, there is only the road back - a very familiar road. You sound like you've got your technical foundation already in place (you're creating templates, integrating your software/hardware, organizing groups of tools, etc.) and now it's time to learn them inside-out and backwards. At this point, familiar is your friend.

No doubt that at the end of the day, the one who finishes first (or at all) is not the one who drives the fastest, but who most skillfully drives the course( + a spit of luck

Now that you've found your resource limits, you can only get more and more successful at utilizing those resources to your own best advantage, and producing progressively better audio and music than ever before.

I only say the above as it describes the place I've recently found myself in, and I hope it helps.
