No need to explain?
A realtime sampleplayer in your favorite sequncer.
Ok rewire does this but you have to have to software running and remember the settings.
With VSTi plugin it would be like set-and-forget.
Almost as a software VP9000.
I´d like that.

I've been searching the forums, looking for a topic on these lines :)
Gerhard et al, any word on if this might be a possibility (LIVE as a VSTi)??

Brahman, we have currently no plans to release Live as a VST instrument. Our aim is to deliver software that feels complete within the scope of its purpose. It seems the type of functionality provided by Live is best presented in a stand-alone application environment, and that's what we focus on. ReWire connects applications without restriciting their functionality, and interface. Live can be run both as a ReWire master and slave and thereby connects to all major sequencers in the best way there currently is, I think.

yeah but then i have to spend major bucks on a bulky program just to use vsti's when Live gives me sequencing ability and everything else already. Do you know of any cheaper solutions to be able to hook up vstis via rewire to live (on a Mac)? Someone suggested Muzys - but no rewire capability. Oh well, maybe someone will develop a stand-alone vsti host app that can hook up via rewire to other programs.

Twelve, I wouldn't be suprised if an 'imusic' app comes along out of the Logic buyout that provides an OS X host for softsynths.
All the pieces are there, and this would be a way for people (consumers) who don't own gear, but do own some sort of basic MIDI keyboard to play softsynths. Makes sense, after all, OS X does have a folder for VST.
I agree with Gerhard, I would not want to see a VST plug-in of LIVE.
It's like the VST version of meldyne expected.
A standalone app that communicates MIDI audio and sync with other apps will do great.
Rewire worlks ok, but things could be better than rewire.

thank you for the replies!
my dream is being able to sync LIVE to REAKTOR on a PC without a bulky intermediary app - so out of curiosity, I posted the question to both publisher's forums: whether (a) LIVE would be adding a VSTi version (which, I guess, would still require a middleman), and (b) whether REAKTOR planned on adding REWIRE support :) <-- which they need to do!
solutions that are currently available:
(1) find a cheap copy of Cubase VST 3.7 or higher
(2) the impending release of Orion Platinum will have REWIRE support and of course can host VSTi instruments
can anybody think of anything else that's available right now?
Nay to VSTi say I

Hello all,
I feel as Gerhart does about the VSTi situation. If I want to use VSTi, I use Logic. Live as a program doesn't need to go down a path of 'Jack of all trade master of none'.
Lets face it, the reason why people enjoy using this program so much is that what it does it does so well.
Too many bells and whistles just gives you too many bells and whistles. Quality over quantity.......any day!
Thanks Krzysztof

I completely agree. Live is a great program like it is today. If I would be Ableton, I would focus on *enhancing* the current version, instead of adding bells and whistles. I never experienced such a stable program in my life [the first 5 performances I always waited for the inevitable to happen, but it never *never* crashed once] - and I had great responses from the public and musicians [most of my fellow musicians had crashing computers, crashing hard disk recorders, etc].
So, please don't add anything that would make it less stable. I love your implementation of VST effects, but I wouldn't even mind if they weren't there - I love the built-in effects from Ableton !
An example of enhancing would be: optimizing the stretch algorythm + multiple projects at teh same time + some crossfading technology.
Leave the VSTi approach to another company that's willing to write a simple rewire app that hosts VSTi's. Or maybe Ableton can write a separate app theirselves ?

can anybody think of anything else that's available right now?
that jack of all jack-of-all-trades, Max/MSP,
will host VSTi instruments, and, like Live,
it will work either as a ReWire master or slave.
Note that you don't necessarily need to
purchase a copy of Max/MSP. If someone
writes a decent VSTi shell (perhaps including
a sequencer), then you can use it with
the free, runtime version of Max/MSP,
provided they give you the patch.

Thanks Yon, since you seem to know what your talking about with this - you wouldn't be interested in getting this going now would you? Anyone else know how to create (or have created) a VSTi shell that can hook up to Live via Rewire using Max/MSP?
