using a midi note as gate (not trigger)

I got a trigger finger and I want to use pads as gates. Exemple, one track should only be heard when i press down, if the pad is released then the track is silent. In place of the usual note on/off typical of keys, I figured a note on/on was nessecary. Should I use some kind of midi translator program to do this or is there another way?

Doesn't it work if you set the clip launching in the clip properties to "gate" ?

I guess but that's not what I want to do... I don't want to trigger or gate clips, I want to gate a playing track. Sorry I wasn't clear. I just got another idea; is there a way to change velocity into cc midi messages?

Have you looked at Midi learn for the track mute, and selecting the correct Convention (Mode) to do the right thing based on on/off? p. 320 and on in the pdf manual.
