Perfoming Live w/o any stops in songs?

Ive seen The Advent do this w/ hardware where it almost sounds like he's djing. No stoping when switching to the next song. Kinda like straight up beat mixing. Is this possible in Live?

Yes it is possible with Live.
To get it sounding as a dj mix you can have drum loop on 1 track and another drum loop on another track and use track volumes to fade 1 in and the other out and it will sound like a dj blending beats with no worry about beat matching since live auto beat matches every thing. Down load the free demo and you can try your self.

If you want a live performance set with no pause in audio you would probly want to work in the session view mode. You can make it last as long as you like just keep adding more scenes and you can make it last longer. Also session view is more fun than arranger view for Live use  My current Live session view set lasts 1 hour and is 30 scenes in total, I made each scene into a sort of mini song and use some of the same sounds from 1 scene to another so when I switch scenes it sounds some what simular and not a sudden change in sound. There are many ways to orginize your Live set it is just a matter of finding what works best for you.

i've been working same way than you...having lots of fun...but i still couldn't figure out if there is a way to open for example 10 files at the time and automaticly have them align horizontally and not vertically...do you know what i mean?any clue?
thnx

If I understand correctly, you want to have multiple songs (currently individual, seperate live sets) combined into one LONG linear sequence in the arranger view. If this is the case, I think you could just drop all of the appropriate clips in the approriate places in the arranger view to create a LONG arrangement. This would require a bit of work depending on how many tracks/clips you're dealing with, so it may not be applicable. You can also open an existing set/song that you wish to add to your LONG arrangement. Then if you start at the top left corner of the first track in the arranger view, left click the mouse and drag to the bottom right corner of the last track, the entire song should be selected (use the click and drag to get certain parts, or just select all to get everything). Then copy it. Open the LONG live set, and paste everything you just copied into the LONG set. Issues that may come up (I haven't thoroughly tried this yet) would be different tempos for different songs, key signatures of songs, etc. If you do work in the arranger view, and want to perform non-stop live sets, then I think the way I describe would be the best way to bring multiple songs/sets into one LONG set.

hope that helps,

Ryan

Other issues are fx send settings and inline fx like filters etc etc not being copied with ur song. So try and work on a system where drums are always on say channel 1 and basslines on ch 2 etc etc and then if you put an inline tweakable filter on the drums on ch 1 on the " first song " of your live set and the " second song " has no filter on it but the " third song " does you have the ability to play with the filter as you play the material. With your midi controller you ca set it up so that you can fade one track into the other etc etc but that may require you to have " two ch's of drums " or others like basslines.
There are a lot of combinations and obviously it's totally personal as how to use the open architecture of live in this way dependant on your hard/software limitations.

Last summer i was using a
Titanium Mac with headphone output to Own DJ mixer
2 port midi usb thingy
kenton control freak live - knobs assigned tocontrolling my filters and fx sends ( delays reverb).
yamaha pro-mix one - assigned as controller only no audio - used to control the faders within live- acted like vitual live mixer.

I had just got live so this was my first time getting it together for live work. I kept all my song parts separetly (bass drums synths etc etc) as i wanted an open architecture basis for my playing to keep it " LiVe ". It was good and worked well especially as the whole thing was put together in a week including hardware concept. There was lot of work involved balancing the audio levels as i switched through songs and parts of songs using this method though.
Today i would compress the differnet parts of songs together as opposed to keeping everything seperate. You only have so much concentartion when your playing " on the moment ' and that would better be directed on the overall sound and compostion as oposed to the mixing.

Everything in the future will be pre-mixed and not quite so open, a little bit more defined a little less sweat inducing for me and more adrenalin inducing for the crowd.

Jamie,

I did the same thing when I started with Live. I would record my songs as a few diff tracks for drums, synths, etc but now I just do a full mixdown of a song and focus on mixing, filtering and the flow of the music. Also it saves a lot of time by not having to export all the individual tracks.

But I still sometimes just throw in extra loops on the fly to do a live remix.

bioroid,
yes me too some tracks with the automation etc etc are just not possible to practically replay live but i,m still trying to with other songs keep the individuall parts seperate ( on a more managable level ) so i can get funky with them . Pretty exciting that way and keeps it fresh and engaging for me. I use to go out with my Tr909. Tb 303 and Juno 60 and just jam live with them no sequencer apart from the 303 and no predetermined route of progression. That was 10 years ago now and i,m thinking of taking the 909 out again with say live running in rewire slave to cubase vst and executing midi sequences from cubase to my Korg Micro korg. I also use to take out a moog prodigy which kinda sounds like the micro korg in some ways but was very expressive - you gotta know the knobs thought to make that rock and there are no memories on it - but it is a rocket machine when you wind it up.

Thank god for Live because the last gig i did before last summer's was i n Portugal and i shipped over nearly all my studio for that. All lot of work, packaging shipping and setting up plus i had broken leg. With my laptop i can embody the main chunk of my studio and still retain a high degreee of fluid writing ability on the stage. Truly brilliant ! :P

Jamie,

I also have a microKorg but I wish I got the MS2000 instead because of the internal sequencer which could be sync'd to Live and not require Cubase or something else running to sequence it.

I have a nice VSTi clone of a 303 I'm working on that I built a special VST fx version for a Live gig and it worked really well. I may use some of that code with some other code I have an build a sequencer/sampler plugin to use with Live also. If I only had more time to work on that stuff.

I tried opening two instances of Live at the same time, and Windows XP choked; I didn't expect to get sound working in both instances, but did want to copy between sets. It didn't work :? .

I also tried, forlornly, to copy from one set, close live, and reopen another set, but, as I expected, this did not work either. Are you using a Mac? Has anyone here been able to copy between sets, simultaneously or otherwise?

Thanks for any responses,

e.
