I'm loving the resonator plugin but it seems rather limited (always sounds pretty similar). Anyone know any other plugins like this that sort of add pitch to an already existing sound?

I have Reaktor 5, but I believe Electronic Instruments should work as VST plug-ins, especially if there are FX ensembles in that package.

Have you checked the Native Instruments website out? It should say wether or not you can use that package as a VST plug-in with a host such as Live. There are also a lot of really cool videos showcasing very talented artists using Native Instruments software. Even if you don't use Native Instruments software the videos are still worth watching, very entertaining for electronic music heads.

I don't agree at all that Resonators always sounds the same. I've been abusing the hell out of this effect since it came out, and I'm still surprised by the variety of noises I get out of it. Of course, I put a lot of noises *into* it, which likely makes all the difference. If you only feed it drum sounds, you'll only get plunky noises (like plucked strings.) However, if you feed it washy, slow-attack sounds, it becomes quite hard to predict the flavor of its output. Overdriving the input can lead to great results, too.

The other reason I keep coming back to it is that you can independently sequence each voice -- sometimes I will set up envelopes to detune certain voices quite drastically, or use glissandos for chord changes instead of instant steps between notes. This has totally spoiled me -- I wish it were possible to do these things with MIDI.

If you already have Reaktor then you need to get the Electronic Instruments 2 suite(no XT), it doesn't ship with Reaktor. But I have the standalone version of the suite(XT) and yes sunbather, each ensemble comes as a standalone instrument, and (most) as a VST plug-in too (FX-designation). Quite honestly any one of these is worth the price, but you get eight of 'em.

The VST implementation is not flawless in Live(4). Maybe because of the baggage that each one of these little powerhouses carries with it in that they each run the Reaktor shell. Modest CPU drain as well(in the 20's). Too bad the documentation is skimpy on these very powerful ensembles.

(Sorry, but this was meant to be part of the post above but my ISP hung on me, right in the middle of it...)


Here's a sample of what the Resochord VST (why didn't they call it Resokord? ) can do with the same, repeating, (24bit) (acoustic) drum loop.

It creates sooo much depth: strumming, harmonics, and percussion all from a plain drum sound. I still haven't learned to properly use it yet.

I also agree with eam moon that Live's Resonators are more versatile than they might first appear, on the surface. I've used them on a couple tracks with great results.

Can anyone else recommend a VST (preferably free) that has similar results to Live's "Resonators" or NI's "ResoChord" ?

Yes indeedy. There are quite a few crazy loops in the SoundWrecks pack that use clip-envelopes and resonators heavily - the main chords in this demo are done using that technique:

thats just a vocoder. probably she played the keyboard at the same time as singing using the vocoder. to me the sound of it reminds me of the electrix warpfactory.
