Audio/VST/Midi programming resources, your help!

Hey!
I'm currently developing an idea regarding generative music composition. This proyect will probably span quite a long time, and I have several technical challenges to solve, mainly the following:

- Graphical User Interface
- Midi I/O
- Generative Engine
- Audio Engine
- VST "hosting"

Phase 1 would be to develop a simple GUI, the generative engine and be able to handle Midi I/O (mostly output at the moment). Phase 1 of the project could well be a VST that creates midi output, so that I can plug it as a MIDI effect in Live 5. Or a standalone Midi generator, that could be "plugged" into Live using a midi port emulator (LoopBE?).

Phase 2/3/... would be transforming this into a standalone app for live performance, if the concept proves to be interesting/useful.

I'm a systems analyst, but I have never developed anything that deals with midi/audio. Hence, I first need to read a lot about it. A possible framework for developing this could be MAX/MSP or Pure Data, but I'm not really sure whether I prefer doing this from the ground up in C/C++ or similar, for total control of what's going on.

I would really appreciate any links to documentation/forums/mail groups that are related to the subject!

PD PD PD!

PureData is great!

If you can't afford MAX/MSP, Jmax is a Java supporting version and its free!

This should be achievable in PD as more or less anything is. If I had time, I'd volunteer, but already have several projects on in PD as it is.

tomperson - a good place to visit is the "DSP and Plug-in Development" category over at the KVR Forum. If you can't find your answer there, I'm sure the guys there will point you in the right direction.

As far as I can remember, JMax was discontinued some time ago.
VST - your on windows, yeah?
Good starting place might be to download the VST api, maybe get your hands on some source code somewhere.

Thanks guys. As I've been researching more, I started to realise that my original project idea was too big for me to do it on my own starting from scratch.

So, I'll probably try to start with a simpler "proof of concept" in some already existing framework...namely MAX/MSP or PD.

Any tips/hints regarding where to go from there?
