Using Live on 2 laptops simultaneously

Does anyone know a way of using Live on 2 laptops simultaneously, preferably hooked up to one interface? Reason for this is so that I can flip between sessions on the fly without having to wait for a session to open up. I'm currently using a Mac PowerBook G4 hooked up to a M-Audio 410.

Saw slam doing this one Saturday night...obviously 1 laptop each, wondered how this worked!

You will however need to purchase a second Live license.

Buy 2 copies of Live and install on both machines > have the two machines networked (over a cross-over cable) > send Midi Sync/Control/Midi messages from one machine over Ethernet (if your using Tiger on both machines), > send audio from the 'slave machine' via Wormhole 2 or Jack, and bring it up as a input on the 'Master Machine' (may have to play about with Latency a bit though).

You can even control the 'Slave' Mac by just using an app called Teleport, which enables you to control many machines from just one keyboard/mouse...

I dont even really need them to slave, its purely so that I can decide which session I want to open up next as I'm performing, also sometimes when opening up the next session while playing live it can take a while, especially if its a big session. Would I need to buy a dual interface or can I hook both laptops up to one interface?

Just looked at the wormhole homepage - very impressive little utility.

Does anyone know if us PC users are blessed with anything similar? I'd like to send Midi clock and audio over ethernet if possible.

Cheers.

Worm Hole runs fine on PCs. but latancy can be an issue.

No need to buy 2 copies of live though, as long as you don't need to save anything you can run it quite legally in demo mode on as many PCs as you like.

Why not lock one to the other using smpte??

does live not support smpte time code or midi timecode or something?

Slave one laptop to the other like that.
what am I missing?

I recently build a small box with 16 (stereo) inputs and 8 stereo-outputs.
So, I've got 8 inputs for one notebook (A) and 8 inputs for the other notebook (B).

For each input (1 through 8 ) I soldered two inputs to one output.
I use two notebooks with two RME hammerfall audiocards which has 8 inputs and outputs.

I hooked up output1 from my Hammerfall on notebook A to input1A
I hooked up output1 from my Hammerfall on notebook B to input1B
etcetera.

It's lay-out is like follows:

input 1A--\
................>output1
input 1B--/

input 2A--\
................>output2
input 2B--/

input 3A--\
................>output3
input 3B--/

etcetera.

The 8 outputs are routed to a DI which is hooked up on the PA.

Works flawless. Just make sure you don't press play on both notebooks at the same time.... :)

Is it not enough to have the second licence number to use live on two machines at time? It costs less than a second copy so fai I know but I might be wrong.

Hey nobbystylus, when are you coming back to rock Zürich?

Does Wormhole support routing 8 different audio channels?

with wormhole 2 you can have multiple instances, but each instance only handles 2 channels. there is a synch function thar keeps rhe different instances in synch.

the max number of channels depends on the bandwidth of your network and the sample rate/bit depth you are working with.
ar aprox 700 Kbits/second per mono channel (16 bit 44.1KHz) 8 channels should not be a problem.

I like the idea of buying one and having demo copies on the other machines.. never thought of that for gigs..

Not back to Zurich before the new year i'm afraid.. hoping for something early in the new year... Hope xmas is good for all you Zurichians!!
