best headphones

Post by feyshay » Tue Nov 22, 2005 3:31 am

What headphones would you recommend in the $100-$200 range.
This is for use at home, mostly guitar, vocal, synthesizers, piano.
Of course, for music listening.
Currently I have a crappy set of Koss headphones. (UR/29). I guess they're not bad for what they cost. I need an upgrade.
Thanks for the recommendations.

headphones are more subjective than anything...

i have a pair of Sony V6 headphones which i find quite good for tracking and listening.

I have a few different sets. Sennheiser HD 280 sound the best to me and offer excellent isolation for recording acoustic instruments and vocals. Sony MDR 7506 are the lightest weight and are my second choice for sound quality. Audio Technica ATH-M40fs are the most comfortable to wear for long stretches and have a really nice flat response.

For me, it ended up being the senn hd580's. They were so comfy and sounded very transparent. Nice for all types of situations, except live.....no good for that (open type)

just to add to the pool of into..the V6's i have use the same driver as the MDR7506 that Frantag and AdamJay use. They have the same frequency response and cost a bit less than the MDR's.

Anything in the Etymotic series. Balanced, neutral, perfect for tracking and mixing, reveals so much detail. You gotta deal with them being in-ear, but it's worth it.

hd280?

Post by feyshay » Wed Nov 23, 2005 2:36 am

I really can't stand in-ear headphones. I've heard good things about the Senn HD280 Pro. They seem hard to beat at the price. They'll seem to do fine for tracking. Will they be sufficient for synthesizer work and early mixing?
Would the HD250 be better?
The 580's are open, which would limit their use in my situation (a lot of acoustic guitar, vocal, etc.) for tracking.

Those were the main purposes that I bought the HD280's for. I've been really happy with them. I've heard from others that they are not well built, but the ones I have are pretty sturdy. My only dislike with them is that the cable is coiled instead of straight and they use a 1/4 inch to mini adapter. I think the Sony MDR 7506 are much more flimsy.

i use the audio-technica ath-m49fs (studio) and the stanton dj2000 (road)...

both are good, but i have to say that the stantons are amazing for the price (about $100CDN)...good sound, they fold up, and have a 'mono' switch that's come in really handy when checking mix compatibility...i bought them as a kind of 'disposable' pair, expecting them to get minor use and eventually become trashed, but they get a lot of studio use and have stood up very well, despite getting dropped, run over, etc.

given your price range, i think they'd be worth a look.

another thing...most people i know use sonys...they look good but people seem pretty unanimous that the build quality is crap. i think the 7506 is a bit better in this respect, though...

Got a brand new pair of sennheiser HD25 for really cheap on ebay...... well under half price... paid £25!!! They didnt have a box or anything (came in a sealed bag) as they were given out to customers flying on the once famous concorde! There are loads of people selling them as collectors items as they come with the British Airways Logo printed on them. Some of them not knowing how much they are actually worth!

Still, they work pefectly and sound great, and its nice to have a piece of Super Sonic History srapped to your head when playing out live etc..... :D

a vote for the Audio Technica's, we have them AKG's and some Sennheisers at the studio I work at and the AT's sound best and are the most closed.

Quick note about the Sennheiser HD 280s: If you have middle-of-the-ear piercing(s), the Senns have plenty of interior space. Just thought you should know. Long live rockets.
