After installing the update to live, I no longer have the option of selecting between outputs 1-2 and outputs 3-4 for master/prelisten.

Prior to the update, the Audio preferences box would give me the option of selecting between those 2 groups of outputs. Now it just says "Audiosport Out."

Anyone know why?

I don't know which operating system and driver architecture you're using. If it's ASIO then you could press on the "Output Config" button in Live's Audio preferences to see if all channels there are activated.

yeah they are both named the same thing now.. they are their but have the same name.. just remember that the second "audiosport" entry is outs 3/4

work around exists but still a bit of a pain.

i reported this bug during the beta.

I upgraded my driver for the M Audio Quattro, and now Live thinks I have only one output (no prelistening anymore!). It also refers to them as "audiosport" outputs. Audio only comes out of the 3&4 outs.

Before you tell me that I just have to click on it, and the second one in the pull down list will be outs 3&4, IT'S DISABLED. I can't click on it. And under the advanced tab, it only gives me one output TO turn on; I don't even have the option of disabling or enabling a second set of outputs.

I contacted M Audio support and they just told me to reinstall. It didn't help!

In other ways (like in the menu for Midi Sync) live knows that I have a quattro... but why not the prelistening? Have I disabled outs 1&2 somewhere other than the Ableton live preferences dialog?

I have even gone to the M Audio Quattro control panel via the system tray, and the Quattro shows that all 4 outs are working. This is a problem with Live, I think, not the Quattro (though I do not know how to verify that).

in fact the two audio outputs exist but they have the same name
so just select in the menu the higher for the first output and the lower for the second a bit strange from m-audio but their driver are bugged
i use the 1,28b version drivers and it works very well with live

I understand what you're saying, because when the Quattro did have 2 outputs working for me, it worked like you describe.

But now there are not two entries in the pulldown menus. In fact, I cannot pull them down at all. There is only one entry - not two with the same name. One.



I take it that you have never experienced anything like this?

I wonder why my copy of live believes that I have only one output?

Waiting for an answer from ableton about how I might be able to manually wipe out the sound configuration for my copy of live.....

I would assume on of the out channels is disabled. To enable/disable you have to press on the "Output Config" in Live's audio preferences dialog.
There you should see both stereo outputs.

Please let me know if this solve the problem or not.

Alex - Thanks for responding. I understand that you have to cover your bases, but put aside the stupid questions I may have asked in the past This one is really strange.

The output config menu only gives me the option to enable or disable one output - there is only one on/off button to press. And there is only one in the audio preferences menus for master and prelisten.

M Audio tech support told me to wipe out all the Quattro drivers I have anywhere in my system, and reinstall the newest ones. I did this, and I still have the problem of Live only showing one output - both for output config and in the audio preferences section.

Here is a tidbit, though I don't know what it means: I still have Live 2.0 installed, and the last time I used it was before I started having problems with the Quattro/Live. I started Live 2.0, hoping that it would work properly, but I got a message saying something like "Due to external changes to the audio setup, Live will reconfigure itself" etc.

Anyway - if you had to recommend something, would it be a reinstall of live? Can I completely remove Live without erasing any of my songs? I will give it a try tonight if you think it's worth it. I would much rather just manually hack the config file, though, if that is possible.

In hardware set up are you using 24 Bits/Sample? Here you should be able to choose available channel sets and maybe this will show another output button in output config.

but I have fiddled with the ASIO Control Panel till kingdom come. Neither 24 bit (1&2 out, 3&4 out, 1&2 in) nor 16 bit (Channels 1-4 In, Channels 1-4 out) gives me the option of two outputs or a drop down menu in the Ableton preferences box.

I just did a fresh install of both Live and the Quattro, and still no love (though I think I have fixed the graphics bug in the process).

I know this is an idiosyncratic problem - other people do not seem to have experienced something similar, ever. Is that right?

I really don't know what to do. For the record, the Quattro is a great device. When it works....

If you just see one stereo out in Live's output config dialog, Live thinks that the your audio device has just this one stereo port.

So what you still could do

- You should try out another audio software that can handle ASIO to see if you have there also just one or both stereo outs. Something like the Demo of Propellerheads Reason should be enough to check it. It's important to know if it's a problem of Live or of the driver.

- Delete or rename the preferences of Live. The file is called "preferences.cfg" and normally located in "...\Program Files\Ableton\Live 2.0.3\Preferences\"

- Send me the log file of Live. Called "Log.txt". Also normally located in "...\Program Files\Ableton\Live 2.0.3\Preferences\".

Thanks Alex, I will as soon as I get that machine back online. I decided to go ahead and reinstall windows (!) which I'm now wishing I didn't do. Cest la vie.......

All said and done, I did check the Quattro with other programs (Absynth, Fruity Loops, etc) and they all think that I have only one output. So the problem appears to be with the Quattro, not with Live.

I want to thank everyone here for their PATIENCE before I begin.

M Audio tech support has concluded with what might be an obvious solution: my Quattro is fried. This would explain why Absynth and Fruity Loops in addition to Live only show one output.

To their amazing credit, they are shipping me a brand new one. !!! You can't beat that. Just so this thread isn't entirely useless to everyone else out there, I thought I'd include the FULL instructions on how to uninstall or reinstall the Quattro, because it is more complicated than one might expect.

You must have Service Pack 1 for Windows XP.
Go to your Device Manager by right clicking "My Computer" --> Properties --> Device Manager --> Sound video and Game Controllers --> select the Quattro and click REMOVE. Yes, you're sure. Then got to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and remove USB Composite Device.
Now, Double click on "MY computer"
go to "TOOLS"
go to "FOLDER OPTIONS"
click on the "VIEW" tab
make sure "show all files" is checked
make sure "Hide extensions" is unchecked.
Do a search for files and folders.
Under More advanced options, check the boxes labelled
Search Subfolders
Search System Folders
Search Hidden files
Go to the Start Menu/Search or Find/Files and Folders
Search for:
*maua*.*
*usb*4x4*.*
*mm*usb*.*
lmasfltr.sys
*oem*.* containing text "quattro"
Delete all files found under these searches.
Restart your computer.
Here are the complete instructions for a clean installation of the Quattro in XP.
Begin the .exe installer from the downloaded driver files by double clicking it.
Allow it to run until it gets to the "device is now installed" (or "device was successfully installed" screen) DO NOT CLICK FINISH
Power on the Quattro.
The New Hardware Found Wizard will then run 2-3 times. When it's finished, shutdown. Power off the Quattro.
Wait 15 seconds, then power on the Quattro, and boot up.
Your Quattro should now be installed.

Sounds like you have resolved your issue in other ways, but I just wanted to point out something I've noticed with my Quattro: I have had to reinstall it many times for various reasons, and the installer almost NEVER runs correctly. The outcome is that I usually end up with only 2 outs (not 4) visible in live. (System: VAIO 505 w/ xp, sp1, 1.0GHz P4, 384 RAM)

The workaround I've discovered is this: check the "hardware" tab of the audio menu under control panel. Under "Devices" you will see three entries for the Quattro. They SHOULD be "USB Audio Device," "M-Audio Quattro ASIO 1/2," and "M-Audio Quattro ASIO 3/4." Often, however, I find that following installation there are TWO "USB Audio Devices" listed and only one ASIO pair (sometimes it's 3/4, sometimes it's 1/2--sometimes, I've even found 3 USB Audio listings and NO ASIO!). For each "USB Audio Device," double-click, choose the "driver" tab, and click, "update driver." Select "install from a list or specific location," and then, "don't search, I will choose the driver to install." This will give you a list of drivers for the "USB Audio Device." One of the listed "devices" will only give you one choice, the same "USB Audio Device" generic driver already in use. Cancel out of that one and leave it like it is. Double-click the second "USB Audio Device" and repeat the process. The second should have 2 choices: "USB Audio Device" and "M-Audio ASIO". Choose the latter, click OK, and you should be good to go (altho you may want to re-start).

Maybe your quattro is fried . . . but if the new one comes and you have the same problem, try this, it's worked fine for me. M-Audio's drivers are just a little buggy, IME. Best of Luck.

PS: I just noticed, when the quattro is correctly installed, it will have FIVE entries under the "audio devices" tab (both in device manager and in the Sounds and Audio "hardware" section), not just three. The other two are the MIDI drivers, USB and WDM. Sorry for the misspeak.
