When editing MP3 Files...

When you open up an mp3 file for editing, edit it, then save, if you save it at the same quality as before. Is quality lost even more so as u are again compressing the audio file?
If its the same, what about files that are variable bit rate. If u edit it, remix or it or whatever, when u save it again, is quality lost if u save it at the same bit rate, as with variable...well..it's varialbe isn't it. So surely it will change the quality again.
Any thoughts?
Cheers!
