this is different than anything i've tried before. being totally uneducated in music theory (besides the stuff i learned by myself) i feel i have outdone myself. i love this tune to bits. i loved making it. and i think i did a pretty good job.

so, have a listen and maybe prove me wrong.

first thing i would do to make the track more groovy, is to put the hi-hats on the downbeat, and not on the beat.
then you can add some reverb on the snares (a bit).
then you can chop and mangle all the samples more than you did.
i felt like the track wants to be "musical" but doesn't manage to be, and wants to be mangled at the same time, but isn't mangled enough.
listen to forss if you want some really twisted funk.

jazzy,probably, groovy not so, definitely not funk.
etiquettes are limitative but using the right ones is helpful for potential listeners

it's not my kind of stuff, I'm into groove and funk

I loved the quirky bit just after Alf I quite like teh dry teh drums.

Lots of nice samples and stuff. Not too sure of the voice samples, and it's all a bit too under-processed for my taste (like Peeddroo, I like my jazz mangled), but it's overall very nice - there's some wicked programming going on in there.

i'm waiting for Sun Ra to step in and lend a verse.

this is groovy no doubt. i like it.

the only thing i would work on is maybe some varied drum velocities for more of a human groove type feel. Sequence wise its great, but it does sound obviously sequenced when the hi hats are all the same volume/velocities.

If you find this groovy, what track on earth would you think is not groovy ?
There are certainly qualities in that track, some elude me for I'm not into pseudo-jazz, you can say there's an atmosphere or whatever, but groovy !?.

Sorry I was in a bad mood. This is not the sort of stuff I like, not in that form, but I imagine you feel a groove if you like the track. But seriously you must find everything groovy and funky these days as long as it's got a beat.

But as english isn't my language I guess a groove and funk are in fact distant cousins,( or grand-uncles) from anything groovy and funky.
Like sex and sexy. Where some people find a piece of music gear sexy.

To me something groovy owes it to the rhythms, creating something that replaces your heartbeat and make you want to move a part of your body in rhythm, the better the groove, the more parts of your body you want to move.

the drums are so rigid and straight here, i imagine the robot of the other thread, with a jazzy suit ( jazzy is also a distant relative of jazz) playing the 8ths on a keyboard.

Listened to it... its cool and its groovy and funky. Just because its not as straight of a beat as this http://osmotic.peterdidit.com/Soulive.mov does not mean it aint funky. I like it.

thanks all for you input. that bit about changing velocities for the hats... well it's on the top of my 'to-do'list'

Hey this is a VERY good start on the direction you are going in. I also agree on the drums being a little to perfect sounding. Just give the drums a more human touch and leave the rest alone. Oh, and maybe draw it out just a little bit longer with a break down or something.

Flanger and Ninja Tune artists come to mind when listening to this.

hope i didn't sound too rude, i was in a hurry when i posted my message, but still wanted you to know what i felt.

the track is good, i really think putting a steady hihat on the downbeats would help the groove and would enhance the jazzy feeling.

now i would add some crazyness into it, but it's just me.
did you work the samples as audio files in Live or did you use a sampler?
