Is there really a chance in hell that Live is going to care about Dual-Core Centrinos since it really doesn't care about any other processor "tricks"?? (Hyper Threading, Dual Processors, etc..)

I bet higher clock and motherboard speeds, and improved cache will help, but Live won't give a rat's about the Dual Core.

Which will mean all of us who will likely be buying Dual Core Centrino PCs & Macs in the future will be paying extra for about the same speed?

Ableton is a small company. The majority of users are using Live on laptops for DJ and Live PA performances. Ableton may focus on dual CPU in the future but it's not a priority at this time.

The above paragraph is what I've been told several times by Ableton (as recent as last week) each time I inquire about multi-cpu support. The fastest single core Xeon or AMD is how to make the most of Live.

this is really a shame as they're obviously trying to position Live as a DAW and not only as a live performance tool with limited track count.
See what happens when you rewire Reason, load up up a Reason Drum Kits Refill and try to mix the dry kit in Live by routing the single sampler outputs to single live tracks. You're better off using Reason effects to do the drum mix since it eats a ridiculous amount of CPU. I know I'm a bit behind with my iBook G4 800MHz, performance wise, but still the difference is too drastic. Efficient multi-threading support would probably help here.
Makes me want to get Digital Performer from time to time, but I dig Lives workflow too much to seriously consider shelling out another 600EUR.

I don't know about Europe, but in the U.S. if you own Live (or any other competing DAW) you can get DP for $329 US. That should be like 280EUR?

I'm doing the exact same thing as you with Live and Reason drumkits plus liberal usage of Waves plugins and so far running a full drum line (seperate tracks for each element), bass line and a bit of percussion im having no drastic cpu issues, though they may pop up soon when i start layering the synths. I'm running an AMD 3500+ cpu with 2 gigs of ram. You might just want to upgrade your computer.

thanks for assuring me that my computer is crap Let's not go the boring pc vs. mac/logic vs. live performance road, we've been there too often. I know what you mean, but I'm trying to hold out for the Intel Macs ... just wish me luck that I won't give in to an impulse buy too soon.

i don't mind paying more to upgrade to a better cpu even though Live won't use it to it's best potential. you still have the OS, services and other applications and crap running. thats when the extra horse power or RAM could come in handy.
