USB Power Settings, X-Station and Audio Latency

i've been having some problems getting my x-stations audio latency setup in ableton.

basically, the problem is that everytime that i go through the audio latency setup procedure i get different results, so the amount of latency is unstable and varies each time.
i'm using a sony vaio s2xp laptop running windows xp, live 5 and the x-station as my audio interface (via USB).
i've been told elsewhere that the unstable latency is probably due to how my usb power settings are configured in windows. so what i need to know is how do i find these settings and exactly what should i adjust to solve this problem?
..i can find the usb settings from within the windows control pannel/device manager but i have no idea what settings i should actually adjust..
many thanks for any help with this. i'm desperate to get this solved and configured so i can get back to making music!

hi,
I have had problems with latency in the past, but only when trying to use the internal soundcard for my laptop, its a rubbish card that i only use out of conveniance.
are you trying to use the x station and the internal soundcard of your laptop?

i have just read your other post that you have highlighted above.
The latency compensation is used to correct your recording when it appears to be out of sync. this doesnt reduce the latency of your soundcard.
20ms is just about audiable to most people, you should have latency much lower than that, 6 - 11ms should be fine, 1.5ms isnt audiable.

Hi DFENS,
which exactly version of Live 5 do you use (5.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2, or 5.0.3b4) and which driver architecture (DirectX/MME or ASIO)?

hi Alex,
its version 5.0.1 i have installed and i'm running ASIO drivers

the problem is that the audio latency is unstable and differs everytime i try and record something.

Hi DFENS,
with Live 5.0.we fixed a bug where the latency information was rounded to integer values by mistakes. This could partly be a reason why it seems to be different each time. So you should use it with Live 5.0.2 or better give the latest beta Live 5.0.3b4 a try.

ok, i'm gonna upgrade now. thanks for the heads up. i'll let you know if that solves it.

Hey Alex,
ok, i've tried upgrading to 5.02 and been through the latency setup proceedure again. it seems (im may be mistaken) to of improved the unstable latency, but it still varies a little every time i record. it still is giving a difference of about 1ms still each time. so the 5.02 driver seems to of solved part of problem and improved the unstability, but its still giving me a different latency everytime time i record.
anymore suggestions..?

Unfortunately not really. You could try if ti behaves better with a different buffer size for your audio interface but in the end we depend on the latency information provided from the audio interface and of its stability.
