midi lag or latency

I use Live with my iBook 500 MHz, using the built-in audio output, with thge band I'm in -- the John Scofield Band.
I trigger Live playback with a midifoot controller. When I press a button with my foot on the downbeat, Live's starts playing slightly later, which means that in order to start on the downbeat and be in time with the drummer, I have to depress my foot controller "on tope of the beat." This is very difficult to do in a musical setting.
What can I do to make Live start more in accordance with pressing the foot controller button? A USB audio device? An external midiclock? A different laptop (PC even)?
