crash while recording (mac os9.2)

dear ableton support bods and general forum peeps,
(this is basically a copy of the e-mail i just sent to [email protected] - but perhaps other folk might be able to help too)
my gear:
apple mac iBook. G3500. 10MB internal HD.
384MB RAM. OS9.2.2 roughly 2.2 gig free space on the drive. very recently optimized using norton utilities.
live version 2.0.3
edirol UA-1A USB interface. (standard USB driver)
i have an ongoing problem with recording using live on my iBook. about 80 to 90% of my attempts to record audio into live result in the computer 'freezing' when i stop the recording. sometimes it works, (especially if the audio is short - not more than a bar or two) but so often it doesn't.
by 'freeze' i mean the computer totally locks up. i can move the mouse/cursor but have to restart the computer (by holding down the power switch). i cannot 'force quit' live.
i'm happy to answer any questions so i can get this issue resolved.
regards,
jc.
