this is one i havent specifically posted about but im wondering who else is getting this alot

i call it the White Screen of Death because this is what Live gives me when it locks up with anything, and that's alot of the time.

its just a full white screen with a windows titlebar and thats it.

situations this happens with:

- re-opening a set. seems to be any set thats not all audio. the more VST channels - active or not - the longer the wait. WAIT: 3 to 10 minutes

- closing a set. same as above. WAIT: ~5 minutes

- copying an audio or MIDI clip of any size - see above about VST channels and for that matter all these scenarious - seems random, one second its fine, next second same clip section bad. WAIT - 3 secs to 2 min

- rendering to disk - occasionally

- and randomly - no real cause i can see, just does it

Athlon 2600 XP
Win XP2
1 gig RAM
2 x 7200 RPM hdd
M-Audio 24/96 PCI; TAscam US-122 USB
Radeon 9600

- creating audio or MIDI channels. same issue

edit: running 5.02, but each vs has been getting steadily worse since 4.0

first i've heard of this bug. running 5.0.3b6 on mac osx 10.4.3.

Seriously, I've never heard of the WSOD. My only suggestion would be to strip your system down and add the different elements until you find the one causing the problem. Frustrating and time-consuming, I know.

I haven't seen the WSOD either supster. If it's the actual gu interface that disappears could there be a problem with the video card?

when you get this "White Screen of Death"... is the complete operating system somehow frozen or only Live?
And do you can still minimize and maximize the "white" Live?

I noticed a WSOhalfD also a few times, often when switching between different soundcards. But it never gets completely white, there always stay fragments of Live´s gui and it doesn´t completely lock up, the whiteness disappears always afterwards.

hey alex ... just came back in to bump this thread, didnt realize there was a reply

- its just Live that locks up. everything else multitasks fine, depending on what it was doing when it locked. of course i dont open anything of consequence, mainly browser and IM while im waiting, wont risk it.

if its opening a set with lots of clips of both types / VSTs, my system does slow down - not enough to crash me or stop me, but things are noticably slower as something churns away my resources and disk

and yes i can still minimize and maximize Live fine. any ideas?

also, couple of things:

- a few people with dog slow arrange grid and lockup problems had the RADEON 9000 series video card - have you guys done any testing on that?

- and, i reported an issue with this same system during the last beta test - and that is Live does not open normally,

the GUI disappears after the splash screen and the only way to see it is to flip up the taskmanager. it "hides" (behind windows web desktop?) and taskman forces it to the front. was there any resolution on this or ideas?

cause all these things could be related


PS - add to the list of triggers for this, dragging a Live Clip from another set in the browser. all audio right now. thats why im on here, its about 2-3 minutes per Clip, just locks up white

yes its the same white that appears on the options window when you change sound cards, just covers my whole screen

well we all want to avoid taking a shot in the dark dropping another 150-500 bucks on new hardware that your not sure is even going to fix the problem.

when that same hardware is basic, well known and solid with most other things

weve all been down that road and its expensive, time consuming and one more thing that brings you away from music. much better to find a common denominator with other people and get a good idea what it is first i think

honestly would rather pull my fingernails out then do that. right now.

i get the dog slow arrange view and i have an ati radeon (mobility) 9000...

there was a thread either in the beta forum after the first release in september or so, or a little later in this forum. it was a few months ago either way. just speculation, nobody had done any real testing afaik

Hi supster,

the "white screen" indicates the Live is not updating its surface, very probably because it is waiting for whatever. This can be a system function but also something within Live, maybe a bug.

This behavior could be related to your graphic card or a certain driver revision. Because Ati provides almost every week new drivers for their graphic cards it makes it nearly impossible to nail it down to a specific one.

Have you updated your graphic card driver from time to time? (no request, just a question:) )

yes - i usually check all my hardware sites for updates from time to time and do it if theres a new one.

i just checked ati and actually there was an update posted on 12/21 .. did that now i'll let you know if theres any change at all
