How to get the most out of Live with a titanium G4 17"?

I´m abit stuck with a new titanium G4 17" 1 ghz, I need to use
alot of effects and channels in Live and the machine simply can´t
handle this.

Is there any way to not load the CPU so much?
I run OS X, and am a complete newbee on Mac,
the only software I´ve installed in Live.

Please let me know if I can shut down some apps that somehow could
take cpu load...or if I can bypass something...or like a freeze mode
on Logic.

Any tip would help.

What else is running apart from Live?

there are a few very good OS X streamlining FAQ's and Guides available right now.

also, how much memory do you have?

whatever it is, bump it!

hope this is at all helpful.
