Reason rewired uses CPU even when muted?

iBook G4 800MHz, Reason 3.0.4, Live 4.1.4 and 5.0.2 (Demo):
I have a Live song that uses a fairly demanding Reason Supersaw patch. With all automation and fx going in Live the Song peaks at 65% CPU. When I mute the rewired audio/midi channels the peak drops to 35%. Closing the Reason song drops the CPU to 27%. Idle CPU usage is similar: with Reason song open it's at about 20%, with closed song (Reason is stilll running, rewire channels still specified in Live) the CPU drops to 10%. Reopening the Reason setup increases idle CPU usage to 15%.
This basically means two things:
1.) I need to resample (was prepared for that one)
2.) Reason takes CPU when rewired into Live even when its not in use, i.e. the incoming/outgoing channels are muted? (WTF?)
Any guesses why? Bug? Feature? User error?
thanks a lot ...
