CPU woes

Lately I have been encountering high CPU spikes when using Ableton Live 5, sometimes when I am only playing three or four audio clips at a time.

I have a Macintosh iBook G4 with a 50 GB hard drive and 1.25 GB of RAM, which was working just fine up until recently. In fact my problems seemed to have started when I installed Mac OSX Tiger. I have tried all of the usual procedures (freezing tracks, playing audio clips off of RAM, increasing buffer size, etc.), but haven't been able to correct the problem.

I thought that buying a 250 GB external hard drive and pulling audio clips off of that would solve my conundrum, but it did not. I went back to square one, turning off applications like the widgets and deleting numerous files from the internal hard drive. I examined the activity monitor and noticed that there were large spikes on the meter when Ableton was running, but it seemed rather stable when it wasn't. I even installed the latest Live upgrade, but that did no good either.

So I am left befuddled and frustrated. The only thing I can think of doing now is wiping my main hard drive and starting afresh...

Any suggestions for a sad and confused musician?
