What Live 6 need is some realtime live performance midi plug-in for virtual instruments. This is my only request, why because this is all that I think this program really lacks. The same way that you can control audio in Live is the same freedom we should have with midi. Realtime pattern base sequencing is the next step forward for this software and it can be accomplished now because computer CPU power is now running at speeds no one ever dreamed.

But can't you do that with an empty midi clip running on session view and "adding" notes in realtime as needed?

Which leads me to my biggest wish for a feature.
The ability to use vst midi plugins.
Then one could use reaktor, max or all the available midi generating plugins out there for midi.

midi VST plugs in that work in Live would be good.

However, nothing beats the feel of a real interface. I use one of these things:

I built for my own use with my drehbank, but it will work with any old midi controller.
there isn't much in the way of user support, as it was really intended just for my own use!

It would be sooooo great if ableton did this someday.


in the meantime, angstroms thing looks cool (too bad im a mac user) and there is also machinates brilliant idea that you can look at in the tips and tricks forum.




But, and it feels like i've said this about a million times, the really cool thing about some old analog sequencers was the fact that the period or length of each step was variable. You could get really crazy lurching or swinging sequences that way.

in my sequencer above the little white&grey horizontal boxes control the step/note length.

thats cool.

but when you change the length of a step in the kind of seq i'm talking about, it also changes the start point of the next note. get what i'm saying??

Have you looked at Numerology? I use it stand alone but I'm sure others have it running with Live through Plogue Bidule, and the next major version of Numerology will have Rewire support.

The p3 is very nice I'm in agreement with you but it's expensive, for the price you spend on this machine you could purchase many other toys for the studio. What I am hoping is that if we on this forum talks about this subject more often the guys at Ableton will deliver on this one request of mine and so many others. I've been ask for a plug-in like this sense the program came out many years ago, yes 1.0 the first version I purchased and have been asking for something at the time they could not deliver but now the program is going to go 6.0 and they still have not accomplished this simple request. I'm hoping that maybe just maybe this time they will give us an 8, 16, & 32 step sequencer plug-in for use with both drum plug-ins and synth plug-ins. Why spend $1,800.00 on a P3 when you can have a P3 built in Live 6.0.1 now wouldn't that be the shit or what?
I'm thinking if worst comes to worst I might just break down and purchase a future retro step sequencer, I've hear many great things about the product but am holding off to see if Ableton will come through on this request, I'll wait until Live 6 if Abletons can't deliver then I will spend money on the future retro step sequencer (Mobius). Just to clarify the P3 is 999USD, but I would agree its an expensive purchase if all you were to do was to use it as a one channel simple step sequencer.

I have my P3 controlling my two external synths, and/or synths in a rewired Reason. Live then is used primarily as a source of audio loops all sync'd in time with the P3. The P3 can do randomisation, key changes, and all sorts of other really inspirational things in real time. And like Live you don't have to stop it to do edit things. It has, to a certain extent, changed the way I write music.

BTW If you are looking for a simple but effective hardware sequencer the Frostwave Fat Controller is great fun.

Booyah, for the record, the main issue with step sequencers is not so much the gui in the software, but more an issue of how to interface with it - the main attraction of hardware, as I'm sure mr. Synthbuilder will agree.

The hardware step sequencer is an excellent way of interfacing with software, I could go on and on about the virtues of controlling software with dedicated hardware, but I'll stop myself this time around, and just say that getting a proper step sequencer is a goooood investment - if you ever feel like you're not having fun with the system anymore you just swap out the soft-synth and start over

I don't know if the FutureRetro is the best investment in that price range, though, but the 325$ asking price seems more than fair - however it doesn't have any knobs on it, which definitely takes away a lot of the charm.

Btw, did you try out my step sequencer thingy in Live, booyah?
