From Desktop to Notebook on 800 or less

Time to make Live and Fruity Loops mobile, but I ain't got much to spend. $800 (us) tops. I'm running them on a AMD 1ghz machine right now, and it's ok. I'm looking at the older magnesium clad Dell LS L400, but they top out at 700mhz. But then again, so do the newer iBook (well, 900 now).

Can I run about 8tracks and have Fruity Loops idle or vice versa at the same time?

I know there are some budget laptop options (enpower) but the plasticy PC laptops don't seem to feel right after placing my hands on the newest Apple products (Fruity Loops - no Apple support!)

Any good notebooks I'm missing out on?

trust me on this.. dont waste your money on a cheap laptop, you will regret it. wait a couple of months and save just a couple more dollars.. you can get a pretty decent laptop for $1000-1200. just remember that you will have to spend some money on a external sound card to have decent latecy and sound.

I ended up going with a gateway laptop and loving it. 2.0ghz for about 1100.

check out a used sony, the internal soundcards are great and made it possible for me to sell my 6oomhz ibook some time ago. the internal soundcards are made by yamaha, have very low latency and sound better. (at least to my 600mhz ibook) I don't know about the sound in the ibooks that came after that. get your questions asnwered before you drop the doe.

so right now I am seriously looking into a VPR machine.

metal chassis, P4 1.7ghz, CD-RW/DVD, 512DDR ram

We'll see if it is the desktop replacer I think I'm looking for.
