Create your own sounds. Sampling=laziness and lack of talent. If the individuals who created the original recordings were creative enough to create those sounds that you are after, you should be able to do it too. If you sample you shoudl not call yourself an artist. Thats my two cents.

What a load of rubbish, people sample to get a 'feel' from something, that can't simply be recreated by anyone, I don't use lifted samples much, but I do understand why it's done, and it's not because of lack of talent that's for sure.

All copyright bs aside there is nothing like hearing a really fresh track and then catching some element of a song or audio moment that you know. It is a completely different level of listening psychologically speaking. One tiny drum hit, word, or guitar chord can bring back whole waves of memories and experiences. That's powerful stuff.

People should be compensated for the use of their sound but the whole copyright thing has affected the evoltion of music and sound greatly. In some ways it's too bad money got involved in the game as it seperated music from being something that was integral to the whole community. Gone are the days of everyone standing around singing and playing known songs that belonged to everyone.

Don't get me wrong making money from music is something I appreciate but the current model of copyright is so broken.

i used to be totally anal when it came to sampling matters...would never ever dream of using loops or anything lifted from other records.

ive given up being like that not just because it makes my life sometimes easier, but there are unique properties of particular recorded elements wether its the preamps/compressors they used or maybe its just a unique style that a certain player or programmer has which i would like to incorporate as an element... whatever the reason as long as i make a better listening experience for my audience i will not be bothered by the muse inside me which tells me i'm lazy when i sample.

were it not for sampling many of our favorite artists would not simply be, and since i wish to be some peoples favorite artists, i will not deny myself that opportunity thru the use of my ego.

This was a really good video clip.

Good to see guys like Sage Francis, RJD2 and Prefuse. If anyone doubts the skill in using a sample to make something new, they only need to check out work by those guys, DJ Shadow, Spooky, the Avalanches or DJ Food.

I don't think it is any coincedence that the only songs I finish are the sample-based tracks, because I tend to be WAY more inspired as an "artist" when my own memories and pre-cocieved notions push me.

Also, if you don't build your own drums, you can't call yourself a drummer.

And an Electronic Musician isn't a musician unless they are generating their own electricity... live on stage.

Don't forgot those plugins, must be handcoded, and not in some wimpy highlevel language either, machinecode only.

You can call yourself a drummer if your playing tin cans. By the way look up the definiton of sampling and building. You sample so much you have no idea what the difference is, so sad. Building a drum takes skill and passion. When you use samples use are using someone else art, creativity and hardwork. What about your own? I could go on and on. Think before you open your mouth. Funny that you mention Lee Perry.. and i totally agree that hes an original.. but lord have mercy if the hole reggea enviroment didnt copy each other all the friggin time including Lee Perry INCLUDING Lee Skratch Perry (so get yo own facts straight)! And Yeah where would Lee Perry be if he hadnt done that! Huh!

And whut da fuk do you know about peoples knowledge about drums just because they sample..i mean come on are u stupid?? the real key to know how to use drumsamples (either sliced or looped) is to know how drums work..on top of that u can do alot of things a normal drummer wouldnt be able to do! Another thing is that it takes skill to understand how to program drums + if the shit rox IT ROX no matter what you are using..SAMPLING is an artFORM!

i agree with all your points funk313, but the manner you use to put them across is not really conducive to growth and understanding from the person you direct them towards.
