Newbie...recording guitar and vocals at the same time...

Hi there,

I've got a real simple setup...Line 6 Toneport Ux1, guitar, microphone, headphones...That's it.

I'm trying to record a guitar/vocal track and all I want is to be able to play the guitar (acoustic with a pickup) and sing at the same time. The guitar I can record fine...and the vocals I can record fine except that the acoustic guitar is also picked up on the mic. And seems to echo.

Now I think I know what the problem is. But I don't know how to fix it...

When I have two tracks in live loaded I have to hit record on the guitar track first, then hit record on the vocal track second. So when I play back both at the same time...one is a bit longer than the other. So is there a way to simultaneously begin recording on all tracks at the same time? Or sync the two tracks up so they are the same length?

I realize that sounds completley muddled...I'm not good with the recording terminology, so I hope you guys can figure out what I'm trying to say. Thanks in advance for any help. Greatly appreciated!

In order to record 2 tracks at the same time on a Mac you have to arm one track and then press the apple key as you arm the second track. On a PC I believe it's the same process except you have to press Alt or Ctrl instead of the apple key.

Right...

I got that much...but the problem comes when I go to actually record. I believe that (once both tracks are armed) having to press the record button in each track seperately puts a time lag in when it comes time to play the tracks back...

Timeline:

10:00:00 am - Hit record in track 1 (guitar)
10:00:02 am - Hit record in track 2 (mic)

Play my stuff...

10:05:00 am - Hit stop

Now I've got two tracks recorded...one that is 2 seconds shorter than the other. So when I play back the whole thing...I get a time lag between the mic and the guitar tracks...

Does this make sense?

So is there a way to begin recording on both tracks simultaneously?

You Need to turn off the exclusicve arm in the default Prefs box.

ohh yeah and press the scene play button in session view that way any tracks that are armed will start recording at the same time.

You will NEVER be able to effectively record acoustic guitar and your vocals at the same time. By the sheer principles of sound travel there will always be your guitar bleeding into the vocals. That is one of the reasons that there are isolation booths in studios. What you can do is record both at the same time on two tracks. Throw on your headphones and put the guitar down and do your vocals on a new track armed to record while listening to what you already did. Now you have pristine vocals.
