I would be happy to simply be able to import MIDI files and treat them as I would any other clip.

All additional MIDI implementation would just be icing on the cake.

I'll second that. I'm not asking for a full blown sequencer. Just a MIDI file playback feature where the files are used as clips. Just like you said. That would be sooooo cool.

I couldn't agree more! I just played with the demo of Live, and it would turn my world inside out... if I could use it to fire MIDI at outboard instruments & fx.

I'm happy to create .MID files in a sequencer rather than edit them in Live - at least until Live v3 - but my music's all about freaking with MIDI controllers, so without that aspect, Live doesn't quite work for me, even though it's a fantastic piece of software (congratulations to the Team)!

it would be nice to be able to trigger external devices with LIVE... of course it sounds like I am asking for Logic or something but using this alone would be great!

MIDI is a nightmare and a bane on the computer audio industry!!!!!

When Pro Tools first came out everyone was gong nuts because they could deal with straight audio and not have to deal with stupid MIDI crap anymore.

If you want MIDI, go use any of the other ba-jillion sequencers that support it, but for the love of God Ableton, keep that backwards crap away from this beatiful program!!!

cause indeed would be a good think to have
in a new version of LIVE, just keep it simple,
no VSTi (i would love VSTi's but i think its heavey for live) , just play midi files and loop them of course...

the way I see it, giving Live MIDI capabilities would be mainly useful for playing patterns on VSTi's! do you guys really want to cart around loads of outboard synths?
for my uses, adding VSTi would be a priority over MIDI pattern support. of course, other people's priorities will be different!
but anyway, this is a wishlist. Live has plenty to offer me as it is now.

I agree with os, vsti's would add a hundred more instruments to my setup while a step sequencer offers me nothing more then what reason already does when connected by rewire.

well Its not the same thing, cause having MIDI patterns arranged the same way audio loops are..
yo have even more control and a better organized set... REWIRE is very cool, and i use it...
but you always have to change from aplication to aplication... well no big deal anyways...

Although I can appreciate why many people want to see MIDI implemented in Live in whatever capacity, I must say that I also appreciate the the view of Mr.Anonumous's stupid comment above, though I'm sure there was a much more constructive way of putting it.

I like the fact that Live is 100% audio oriented at this point. I think for me, a step sequencer implementation would be of far more use, with the right key mapping and MIDI control options of course.

Having worked for a developer for several years now and having seen alot of soft synths come and go, I think it's fair to say that with the exception of a precious few, soft synths are quite resource hungry, and make it difficult to use them in tandum with many plugin effects or other program features in a Live situation.

I use soft synths to generate alot of my sounds and for a massive amount of processing tasks, and to be perfectly honest, have been completely content making loops with these various tools and import the wav files into Live. I mean really, since there's no limit on how many loops you can have in a given session, why not jsut jam on your soft synths anmd import ever variation that comes out? Same could be said for hardware. One of the most satisfying moments I have hasd with this program was going to the first show I palyed with it, and relizing 'oh my god, the entirity of the gear I needed for this show was a 7 pound laptop!'...

I'm sure all you smoking keyboard players out there would love to be able to be busting out solos over your Live compositions, that I can fully understand (and love to see!), but why not dedicate a second machine to your lead synth of choice, and be sure you're going to get the best performance out of it with no conflicts? I don't know this is getting long, but I just feel liek personally, I 'd rather have a program that does one thing perfectly than one that doe everything sort of...
