Subject line says it all.. ableton defaults to its own vst plugs dir, but when i give it my main vst plugs dir in preferences, it chugs along for awhile then crashes.. then i can end the task on the taskbar forcing it, but the engine stays as a running process, and end process in task manager doesnt do anything, so i have to reboot. obviously this is quite annoying, can't use any vst plugs this way unless i also copy some to the ableton dir.

any ideas? are there any plugs that are known to make ableton crash even just on initializing the plugs directory?

I have had similar problems with certain combinations of plugs in my vst directory causing Live to crash in the manner you have described. This has happened whether I use Live's VST folder or my own separate folder as the default VST directory. For me, it's been a combination of the VST plug-in Amplitube and, I think, some other freeware plugs (mda plugs). My suggestion is to create a new VST directory folder but only put one plug into it at a time until you can re-create the problem you've been having. If you have tons of plugs, try creating a folder with just the ones you trust and use most frequently and see whether that works for you. I think with some trial and error you can narrow down the cause of the problem.

Also, Live shouldn't default to it's own VST directory if you have selected a separate folder for your VST directory under the Options/Preferences menu.

i also had this problem.

i had to do a few things once i set the directory to get it straight:

1. trash live's prefs
2. remove previous versions of live
3. assign the vst folder in live's application folder as my vst folder

at this point, live 2.03 ran just fine.

when i installed or copied my vst plugs into live's vst folder i would have to start all over again...

i posted here about it, and someone from ableton said
"some plugins are not compatible yet, we're working on this"

so i figured, an update would be forthcoming...

meanwhile i received my logic 6 upgrade in the mail, and what do you know, same thing...

so i scour my vst plugin makers websites for updates and posts about this on their messageboards...

i update my copy of the Lexicon 42 to the new 88 version
threw away my copy of z-room (no update)

did fresh installs of all my other vst plugs from the original cd's and logic and live are working just fine now.

no hassles, no problems.

i wish you a quick and easy installation process...

i found Live crashing when i had the demo of the Z3ta+ synth VSTi in my VSTplugin folder - i'd get the startup screen and then it would just disappear

i deleted the VSTi and Live started up fine.
