can ableton attach program changes to notes within the same clip? want to record program changes from external gear and have each note play a different patch.

I wouldn't even try pulling that off on a hardware set up with hardware sequncer and rack gear.
You would just choke the midi data stream to much.
You would be better off sampling each synth patch.
Mapping them in a sampler to the appropriate key ranges and then sequencing the results if you want it to sound fluid enough.
