Like scene-coloring this might have already come up several times, but anyways.
I usually save every set as self-contained. While I work with Samplitude too, I find a very useful option there: Save as Project (same as self-contained in LIVE) wich corresponds with Trim Objects (same as clips in LIVE).
Especially if you are using a huge number of large samples it considerably will reduce the disk-space used by a self-contained set (in my case up to 99%!).
Samplitude leaves an reasonable amount of samples at start and end of its objects to allow future fine tuning.
I'd mainly see this option as useful for sets wich are somehow finished and used for performing or transfering to the studio.

yeah this would be useful
i have several large files of breaks and samples(100+meg each) that i use in lots of tracks. But in any one track i may only use a couple of seconds from each of these big files. If i save as self contained, the folder ends up as 300 megs or something! even though the song only uses 3 or 4 seconds of audio!!
