rewire question

this seems retarded to me, but do I have to have Rebirth installed to use ReWire on my Mac? I really don't like Propellerhead's products [i'm not much on emulations of 20 year old hardware] but I'd like to try ReWire to connect Live to Max/MSP. Everything I read implys i need Rebirth installed to use ReWire because Rebirth installs the necessary system extension[s] for ReWire to work. If Propellerheads are going to make a product like ReWire, why don't they make a free download of ReWire-only support files. That would be like VST plugins requiring Cubase to be installed even though you're using them in a completely different program... [i really don't like propellerheads :) ]

I'm not sure if this is right, but I downloaded a properlerheads demo of something, maybe it was reason...yes pretty sure of that. And it installed all the appropriate rewire stuff. I chucked reason away, and left the rewire bits. the extensions that is.. seems to work fine.
