Static, distortion, reverb, how on earth do I fix this?

I'm cursed,
I have a Mac, OSX, imic (and have had the same problem with my Powerbook(OSX) as I'm having on my brand, spanking, new, G4 tower with mega-ram) I record a mix that is an hour or so long, and discover static/distortion/reverb, whatever you want to call it, in two places on every mix! I thought it had something to do with lack of ram on my Powerbook which is why I switched recording solely to my G4. But its all for not.
Believe me I am very close to throwing everything off my balcony, however I thought I'd post something first, because this shit is expensive.
I noticed people posted similar problems, however there is no definitive answer/fix for this. I read something about getting a USB hub, something about reworking prefs, but there is nothing that clearly states what you should do when this happens.
Someone please help, and if you don't hurry my hardware will be in a million pieces.
Thank you.
