Well the interesting thing is that Intel is actually leading the design, and their UMPC site doesn't mention XP at all, in fact they say:

Full PC capability based on Intel Architecture and full-featured mainstream OSs, allowing consumers to run familiar applications.

Which leaves the door open for OSX...

The other interesting fact is that ASUS is one the initial vendors, who happen to design/manufacture the new MacBooks...

So I would be very surprised NOT to see an Apple version of this appearing sometime soon...

As a windows user looking at that design I say,
"when are apple coming out with their tablets then?"

god they are ugly.

Firstly, that thing is ugly. OOGLY I SAY! Look at the back of it.... some people just don't know when to take a hint from the industrial design masters at Apple.

Secondly, it's not going to run OSX, and it never will. If it does, I'll publicly eat my hat (it's a nachos hat) in the town square. Microsoft do not like Apple at the moment. They really don't like them. There is very limited cooperation between Apple and Microsoft in getting Virtual PC running on intel macs. I don't think Microsoft want to get it finished, because it would make a lot of peoples windows machines obsolete in a way.

Thirdly, there's a lot of folks hanging out for a mac tablet.... who knows if they've got the resources to do it or not. There's damn strong rumours of a "tablet iPod" at the moment - look out for April 1st. A "tablet mac" may be some time off yet, but you never know what they'll pull out of the hat at their 30th birthday on april 1.

Check the Asus one under it.... Not perfect but much nicer, doesn't look
quite so much like an 80s cassette player. Don't know why they put the
cheap ugly dodgy company one first.

to clear up some facts:

1) The processors initially will be 1ghz pentium m and a celeron based cpus

2) Microsoft has created a 'platform' and the initiative for UMPD manufacturers to create this.. the same way they pushed the tablet pc initiative

3) intel has their own designs for form factor and i am sure we will see many stylish ones to come yet.. for example this one... please note that the screen swivels to reveal the keyboard: http://www.nu.nl/news.jsp?n=689884&c=134

4) the second generations of this are gonna rock but i think i want first gen even..

We're in the brave new world now where Intel feeds both Microsoft and Apple...this thing is mainly Intel technology. We WILL see an Apple tablet using this technolgy, and it WILL be made by ASUS. It will probably look prettier than the PC version. And I'm always right.

I like the cassette recorder look...

It reminds me of riding in the backseat of the car listening to that god-awful worms song over and over.

those were the days...

that thing looks VERY COOL. I want one just to run side of my laptop. I could run reaktor on it synced to my current laptop. I dont expect that it will cost any more that receptor.

hehe 2006.... year of the tablets....

Personally i'm looking forward to see some of those apple patents that made it to the rumor sites, merge into one product.

Lets see. Touch-screen tablet with specifics to control audio applications.
Chameleonic enclosure. Remotely linked to my home computer, anywhere in the world. Or linked up to the macbook in my backpack.
Online with apple's own wireless service.
Thin design, robust once it reached a couple of revisions...
It would also be the mother of all video ipods

I'm just waiting till it gets the Adam Jay seal of approval :D
Who needs music magazines when you got Adam?
