Severe Digital Distortion

I've just lost another song. I'm trying desperately not to throw my fucking computer out the window and punch a hole in the wall.
I've got two midi tracks (NO fx); impulse and Green Matrix ensemble. When I try to add a third track the whole thing gets completely distorted -- no CPU spikes or anything weird -- just sounds like severe digital distortion on all tracks (horribly loud and awful). It occurs in about 1 out 3 songs and is not specific to any one plugin (from what i can remember).
anyone have this kind of problem? does this constitute a crash?
help me. tell me it's going to be OK.
