another post from me about external synth and timing

Kind of a repost from the Main Forum but I'm still scractching my head so I'll try here instead.

Got Live 5.0.1, a FW410 as a MIDI interface, a SH-101 and a Kenton MIDI to CV. Using a Yamaha CS1X as a MIDI controller keyboard. All on a Powerbook 1.5. This is the first time i've connected an external synth to Live and I've realised that my usual "trial and error plus a bit of RTFM" may not be enuff here.

Connected it all together. Then in Live I double click to make a MIDI clip. The MIDI info comes from and goes to my FW410, MIDI channel 1. Then I select the audio input from the SH in an audio track.

1 Is this right so far? Do I need a MIDI track and an Audio track just to hear my SH play via MIDI? I guess so cos I can hear a simple MIDI clip I created playing via the SH.

Next, if I drag a drum loop into another audio track, it seems that I can hear the SH is delayed. If I add -28 ms track delay on the MIDI channel, it all sounds good.

2 Is this right?

3 In the above set up, monitoring on the MIDI channel is set to OFF and on the Audio channel for the SH is set to ON...again, is this right?

4 Does this all have anything to do with the version of Live I'm using? I don't wanna use a newer version til 5.2 comes out

Sorry for boring you all with this post. Cheers and be gentle but helpful, if u can.
