Using Live as your main sequencer?

Post by toka » Tue Mar 21, 2006 7:10 pm

Hey!

Im a old Logic on PC user and moved over to Cubase SX when Logic no longer could be stable with all the new plugins, and Cubase is keeping me frustrated with the bugs and no user friendly interface, there is so many mouse clicks and the interface kills the creativity.

Im thinking about moving over completely to Live because it reminds me a bit of Logic , fun, easy and creative.

Im producing electronic music so is there anyone else moved from Cubase or Logic completely to Live as their main sequencer?

Also any house producers here who are using Live only?

I used Logic for a long time.... and wanted to love SX, but then came Live. that's all I use and have not looked back.

I even went back to Logic for a minute just to make sure I was not missing anything. I didn't feel like I was missing anything, although I do still like Logic. Still like SX, but I'd rather stay with just one host.

Anything that you feel you may be missing with Live can be easily added in VSTi's and plugs, IMHO.

I do simple stuff with live sax over samples, loops etc. Live's workflow is a joy for me.

i used logic for years then moved to hardware then to ableton live4 now im using Live5. My host is one thing that I never think of changing. I can get all that I need out of live. There are some buggs at the moment but ableton seems to be pretty hard at work sorting them out.

Hi,

I also used Logic (v. 6.4 or so on mac) and still use it as sample editor.
I liked the sound of the logic plug-ins but since I use Live5 workflow in studio has improved a lot and I can actually play electronic music (house, minimal) on stage.

Went from Cubase to Live and don't regret it. Cubase is a more "pro" environment for mixing and midi, but my overall workflow is so much better in Live.

I use Live5 now for, well - let's see - everything musically... 8)

There is only two things I miss from Logic:

1)
The very nice el-piano (and maybe one or two of the synths).

2)
The ability to record a vocal-take (or guitar or another instrument), and then it loops and automaticly makes new tracks while recording - and then afterwords I could listen throught the different tracks, and mute some parts and keep some parts from each track, and in that way put together a total track from many different takes.

I haven't found a way in Live to do this as easy as in Logic - I am still looking...

Aside from these things, I don't miss Logic.

I think it depends on the type of music you're making. If your music is tight to a beat, then I would see no reason not to use just Live. If you're building complex time/tempo-based songs, you will most likely need to use another tool as well, IMO.

I tried ditching SX for Live, couldn't do it in the long run though. :(

I sure feel you on the clunky, inergonomic and unintuitive nature of CubaseSX. I really want to blow it off completely for Live 5 but I'm not certain Live is entirely there yet as a full DAW(I sure would like for it to be) I think the Abes could rule the world if they could pull it off. I myself use Cubase SX as a sample editor and audio recorder but for spontanious writing, Live just can't be beat.

I want to ditch cubase for its shitty shitty shitty Midi implementation.

Its been 10 years now and Cubase still doesn't understand that users want "Midi Learn"....

Ablton is 99% of the the way there. Ideal scenario would be Turn on Midi learn mode, move a fader\knob on controller, move fader\knob on VST and their attached.

I'm going to attempt making a song in Ableton. I hesitant because having fun making music is all about a smooth workflow and learning a new app kills that.

We'll see.

If you record in a loop, you can afterwards "unroll" all the takes, check the manual.

I came from Logic and only use Live now, much better.

Live is all you need, but I still use Peak for mastering. This may change after I buy my new computer and can run a good mastering plugin suite.

SX is still important for me also, but when Live goes dual core on the PC, I'll be using SX less. Cubase can handle many more VI's and tracks than Live at the moment, and VSTiLink is really useful sometimes also. The audio engine of SX is better also, -- but Live will mature into something great, I think. I do rhythm tracks, loops, etc in LIVE, but finish in either SX or occasionally Digital Performer on a Mac. Midi functionality in SX or DP is much more complete than in Live, but Live's workflow is far, far ahead of the other two.

Hey djsynchro,

I have read about the unroll feature.
I am sure it is possible to make a long take in Live, and then cut out the parts that is good.

What I was looking for was old Logic's ability to just record, and then it automaticly created new tracks underneath, and it was very easy to cut in the audio and mute some parts, and not others, and let several tracks be on at the same time, and having some parts play from one track, and some from another, and that way creating one very good (or better, anyways) track...

In Live i imagine I have to unroll the audio, create new tracks that either play for themselves or routes into a totalt track for that instrument, and then finding one part I like, and crtl-e and move it into another track, and so on.

In Logic it was very easy to have several takes and preview easily between different parts on different tracks...

So: If you used to do this in Logic, and you now use Live, and is satisfied with the workflow you have in Live, do you think you could take a minute or two and explain in a little more detail how your workflow is?

Thanks!
