Self contained seems to function in a manner that makes it impossible sometimes to share files without blowing up just about the whole song.

1. When saving self contained, it will magically forget tons of loop points, volume levels et al.

2. When an arrangement is in place, it goes grey and won't play most of the samples in the arrangement, though they are still in the same place in the session view and play there.

Changes that need to be made:

No more "save" button in the clip window. This should be done automatically. Every time you change any parameter in a clip it should automatically save that variant as a new file, without having to hit save or change the name to prevent an overwrite of the core loop.

Worrying if you've saved every single variant in a song with over 300 clips in it is not somthing we should have to do. Finding them by manually saving each clip in a copy of the song by hand is even better. Saving self contained with no back up and blowing a song away forever cuz you are tired from pulling a 12 hour session in the studio to get your new record done (which is now short 1 track for all your efforts) is by far the best.

The SSC function must be developed to the point where the save occurs seamlessly, as right now it's far from it. It should also offer the option to save as a zip, so that the song file and samples are in a compressed folder, ready for transport.

Such a great program with such a massive hole.

so, you're suggesting that every time you change a warp marker, every time you change the gain, play offset, etc. that a new file would automatically be created? this sounds like a horrible idea. what if we're talking about a huge clip? by the time you got it tweaked how you liked it, you might end up with a few gigabytes of versions of this file

in general, it sounds like you may not understand the way clips are operating in live. if you have 300 instances of a single clip in a set, the info for each one which makes it unique is saved in the .als. you generally should only need to use the save button in clip view if you want to save the settings for future use in other sets. i.e. you've got the loop and warping set on your hot new drum loop clip and you want to save those settings for the next time you want to use it.

any sounds/clips which were created while working on a live set are automatically saved in that set's sounds folder. saving self-contained will save copies of clips from other locations to that set's sounds folder.

Live remembers all parameters, variants and sounds just fine if I regular save and reopen a session that isn’t self contained. When I SSC that same session, all (or most) of my clip parameters go out the window and I’m wondering why that is.


Am I missing somthing, or is there a legit hole in the way in which it executes the SSC function.

well, that seems contrary to the intended functioning. to my understanding, the only difference of SSC is that it will include copies of sounds from other locations within the current set's sounds folder. all clip parameters should be contained within the .als file, which is independent of the sounds which are referenced in the set's clips.

I have never experienced such a problem with saving self-contained. however, i also rarely do anything with clip settings so it's possible that's (partly?) why

although i'll add that i've not read any similar complaints, that i can remember.

your problem seems interesting so if you feel like elaborating more, go for it (what parameters remain, which are gone, etc)

I do SSC all the time, and also use a shitload of clip parameter automation. Out of the heap of problems I have had with v5, this has never been one of them.

Is it easy to replicate? If so, I'd fire a copy of the offending set to the Abes and see if they can help.
