Host automation with stylus RMX

I'm trying to do this exactly as it is done in the RMX tutorial video and it's not working. I've created 6 midi tracks to correspond to a 6 part multi in RMX. I've dragged and dropped the individual parts to the arrangement view. Each track has its "midi to" set to Midi 5 (the track the RMX plugin is on). Each midi track gets its own RMX midi channel. If I go to arrangement and hit play, I hit play and RMX is triggered fine and I hear playback. Great. Now I follow the video and go to session view, arm midi track 5 (where the RMX plugin is), hit record and tweak some controls, but when I play it back, none of the controls move. What am I doing wrong?

You're not alone.

I can't get it to work either.

I can record automation if I midi learn a parameter in Stylus and wiggle my hardware, but the whole thing about wiggle the parameters on the Stylus GUI and watching it playback just doesn't work.

I have no idea how they did it for the tutorial. I've stepped through it dozens of times and it just doesn't work.

Wow. Anyone?

AU Plug-In only

Hi,

I have the same problem, which is really bugging me. What's even worse: From what I found out, through a long series of partly angry postings is that the tutorial video is made on a mac with Stylus RMX as AU-Plug-In. And it only works on this platform in this configuration. So with Stylus RMX on Windows and/or as VST you do not seem to have a chance.

They simply do not mention this in the video :-(

Cheers,

Markus

Ah that kind of explains it.

I was going to start stepping back through my versions of Live to see if something fell out after 5.0

So long as you have a hardware controller all is not lost. There are some subtle ways of using them that are also not covered in the tutorial:

1 - If you want to record automation for a loop as part of the loop so that it repeats as the loop does in the session view then arm the track with the loop in. (Eg. If you want to throw in a burst of delay at the end of each bar for a 1 bar loop) your automation will get recorded as part of the clip in session view.

2 - If you want to run the loop in session view but record automation over a period longer than the loop (eg if you want to do a long filter sweep over 8 bars for a 1 bar loop) then arm the track that Stylus is in. This way your automation will get recorded as part of the track in arrange view.

I may do an unofficial tutorial .mov so if anyone else has any other tips they want to throw into the mox let me know.

Stylus is still a demon tool inspite of the bits it can't do in VST on a PC.

Well I'm on a Mac and am not using a hardware controller. In the video, the host automation is not done with a hardware controller. The dude is just tweaking faders with his mouse.

Hi, as I said I am told that the video is done with Stylus as AU plug-in and that is the only way it works. It will not work with the VST plug-in. I do not have a mac, did you try it with the AU plug-in?

Thanks and cheers,

Markus

If I recall I think he does a bit of both in the video (hardware control AND gui knob twiddling).

I had assumed from the rest of this thread that my failure to make it work was a PC thing, but if you can't get it to work on a Mac either then clearly there is something very wrong with how Spectrasonics have handled the automation.

Maybe they got the guys that faked the moon landings to fake their demo video!?

The most annoying thing is that you can automate some parameters through the expanded control panel in Live but NONE of these are useful ones. If you move some of them it changes effect selection in the AUX busses!!! but nothing useful like the main filter cutoff.

I think I tried both, will try the AU again later......

I have both OS X and Windows PC's and the Windows version of RMX is really more difficult. Or maybe it's XP? I too thought it would be just as on the Mac. I used to have my SAGE folder on a shared FireWire drive, that also the Macs address, and on my PC lappie's drive I put a shortcut pointing at that SAGE folder. This has been working fine. But today I decided to copy the SAGE folder (12 GB) to the PC lappy so I can use RMX when I do gigs with that machine. I deleted the shortcut and replaced it with a copy of the real SAGE folder. When I attempt to open RMX in Live I get this error message telling me that "the drive on the network to which the SAGE folder link is ponting seems to be off-line, do you want to select a new location for the SAGE folder?". I click "Yes" and select the SAGE folder and gets the nice and polite Spectrasonics message "SAGE folder successfully identified. Please delete this instance of RMX and open the plug-in again". When I do that the full procedure starts all over again. AAARRRGGGG!!!!!

You can not imagin how disappointed I was when I found out about what I think are "fake" videos. Anyway - do not mention this on a spectrasonics forum. You will get your beating :-)

No, the videos are not fake :-). You've encountered a long-standing limitation of Ableton Live. For a full description of this issue, see "Ableton Live Issues" under "Troubleshooting/FAQs" at:

Thanks for chiming in on this, Glenn.

Your statement seems to imply is that Live is working differently in Windows with RMX VST than in OS X with RMX AU. Is that correct?

Hi Glenn,

Thanks for finally clearing up an issue that has rumbled on for some time now. We can at least all stop trying to get something to work that never will.

Thanks also for the revamp to the Spectrasonics support pages.

The "Ableton Live Issues" thread in the FAQ implies that really to get the full automation working in VST it is up to Ableton to sort out their programming and that there is nothing that you guys at Spectrasonics can do to remedy the situation.

Whilst it is clear that the "over 20,000" parameters in RMX can not all be assigned to the 100 controllers available in Live I would have thought it would be possible, from the Spectrasonics side of things, to make the most commonly used parameters accessable by Live's 100 controllers. There are already RMX parameters controlled by Live but none of them are of any real use. I found one, for example, that when moved changes the effect assigned to the top of Aux 1. Not really the kind of thing I'd need to draw an envelope for.

If it was possible to re-assign what was controlled by Live (I don't know how controls are mapped and declared to the Live engine, is it simply numerical!?) then that would be very useful.

To be able to draw envelopes for everything on the main page, and everything on the mix page would certainly be a start and show willing from Spectrasonics to help those of us who enjoy the software in Live but can't quite squeeze out all of the cool functionality it holds.

That's weird, you could just have a way of assigning first 128 parameters to the ones you wanted in Stylus, a bit like Kontakt. I don't think it's a Live limitation, it's just bad programming from Spectrasonics.
