centrino performance

Hi guys,
while testing my new laptop ( toshiba tecra a4 with centrino 1.86 Mhz) I've found a very strange thing and wanted to check it up with you.
I open Live and leave it with no operations, then > ctrl+alt+canc > task manager > performance.
If I watch the cpu graphic, it is going up and down from 0 to 8/9% with an almost regular cycle ( a peak each 3/4 seconds).
My desktop doesn't do it and so I wanted to check with you if this is a peculiar centrino routine or what.
Thanks,
Luca

Do you have "always on" as your energy saving profile?

The energy saving is set to a custom made (everything always on).
What is speedstep ?
Thanks for your help.

Try setting it to "always on" anyway as opposed to custom settings. Did the trick for me, even though everthing was set to always on in the custom settings.

system always on.
same results.
If I load a more cpu eager app ( like the wonderful mobius ) I can see peaks more evident.
it's funny - but I'm scared...
