sitting here wading thru the end of a project and fighting with the arrange grid right now (see arrange slowness threads)

it hit me - one question keeps coming up ..

whats the difference between a move (click on clip, slide to another location) or copy (same way) or duplicate... and clicking on the clip and CTRL C copy .. CTRV paste?

its anywhere from 15 seconds to a minute or more - thats the difference -
copying and paste usually bypasses the worst lockups and sometimes is almost normal in speed (slight lag)

question is:

what is it about the way live is handling copy paste different from the other methods. its obvious something is really wrong with the code and thats where i think the answer is

im sure way more qualified people than myself are already on it, fingers crossed for live 6 so i can really work again

i'd think that there's a big difference for the GUI between the two methods. if you drag a clip around the screen, it's got to try to keep redrawing that "ghost" image of the clip.

i dont think thats enough to account for the lockups we experience, its anywhere from 5 seconds to up to 5 minutes at a time. if you're not familiar with the issue search, threads go back a couple of years

oh, i've read plenty. just trying to throw out some ideas. i'm not saying it's the whole explanation, but it's one obvious difference between the two methods. i can't speculate about what else is going on because i've never had any problem with copying, moving etc. on the arrangement. knock wood

the only "slowdown" i've been able to get is when i try to paste things passing the playback position, i.e. start duplicating behind the cursor and continue to duplicate until it passes the play position and moves into the future... the audio renders fine, but the screen lags for a sec before it shows all the new dupes.

anyway i know you probably aren't too interested in hearing from people without this problem so i'll shut it
