i cannot seem to get the ableton flanger to to make the typical jet takeoff whoosh sound. i want to put it on some cymbal crashes etc. i don't have very much experience with effects but i have worked on this for hours! i seem to get closer to that sound using the chorus but it's still not perfect. am i missing something? any help would be really appreciated.

I though the typical woosh sound was a typical filter sweep, ie a low pass filter opening up on some sound rich in harmonic content like noise or a crash?

try the auto filter... set the resonance nice and high.

Perhaps you are confusing flanger with phaser?
There is some awesome stuff in the bluetubes bundle

Or for a cheaper and also great solution try audio damage 'Phase Two'

Try doing something to step up the harmonic content of the sound before it gets to the flanger, like adding a little Saturator. Pull the low end off with a high pass filter to make the whooshes brighter & more resonant. Then try browsing the Flanger presets again. I swear there's one in there that overdoes the soaring thing (I remember having to dial it in a little).
