Live 5.2 crashes on launch

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.6, and have the following error on an iMac G5 and a MacBook Pro. Upon installing the Live 5.2 Upgrade, and attempting to run Live I get an error message stating that:
"An error occurred while reading "/Users/steve/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live 5.2/Preferences.cfg". Apparently, the document was created with a more recent, and incompatible version of Live than this. [unkown class "DirectIoDevice" found]"
Is there a fix for this?
many thanks,
Steve

you should be able to delete that preferences file. it should be rebuilt the next time Live runs. it's not uncommon for people to do this to sort out various problems. you will need to tweak your prefs again afterwards

Alas ... the problem starts when Live 5.2 creates the Prefs file ... so it seems to be causing its own error.

have you tried uninstalling completely then reinstall? (each live version is complete in and of itself, not really an "upgrade")

i have just replied to someone else with this problem.
check this thread:
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37001
the reply contains a step by step guide to restoring the prefs.
trashing the folder with all previous preferences (after you have made a backup) should work.
after all, the error message refers directly to the probably corrupt prefs file!
persistence works, or so they say...

Hi Necrophore,
as longjohns already mentioned, did you try to delete this Preferences.cfg (only the file, not the Preferences folder) file before you start Live?
