Just bought an Apple Intel Powerbook and installed Ableton 5 and it won't even play the first demo track without being glitchy as hell and the CPU usage going through the roof!
Have played around with the audio set up but its not really helping matters.
Can anyone please get me round this first hurdle! Soooooo frustrated that I can't even get into the tutorials and get cracking!

Haven't my mac with me, but I remember that there is an option on os x that you have to desactivate (for recent version of osx) cause it consedirably slow down the audio streaming...
it's an option that "crypt" all your files automatically.
in system preference panel --> security (i gues) --> "file vault" not shure about the name
hope it will help

i have the exact same problem, i just got my imac yesterday with 2 gig ram, so it shouldnt be about the power..
i loaded the ableton live 5.2 demo (universal-binary) and the demosong crackles like crazy when the drums kick in.
i feel frustrated, is this a demo problem or a bigger issue??!?
i mean, will i face the same thing with actual Live 5?
i too have played with the buffer size preferences and shit, they make no difference.

Best option would be to consult ableton support:
[email protected] . Give em your system specs - they should be able to sort you out.

Dolius - have just got 5 full version loaded up and have exact same problem as you.
Going to install 5.2 tomorrow and see if that helps.
Otherwise that fresh powerbook I just bought seems like a wasted purchase!
Oh and checked the security / firevault settings and they were turned off
Anyone else with an intel powerbook pro care to shed any light?!!

problem solved: Apples site offered a "Live 5.2 intel universal binary demo, but the file still was the first version of live 5 demo.. And im not the only one who got serously worried bout a new computer purchase: Live "5.2" was the the number one download on apples page..
now its funny, but yesterday..
I got the real 5.2 now and works just fine!
But Apple.com...how can a mistake like that happen??! unbelievable.

You're right! Here's a proper download link:
