Hello,

Hope you don't mind me asking, but what sort of "crap" do you get rid of in XP Pro to make things run "better"? I have a standard install of XP Pro and have to say that everything runs smoothly, efficiently and without problems, but if there is a way to make things run "even better" it would be interesting to know.
So when I have a clean install of XP ( I can do an image restore to get back to a virgin state), what do I get rid of? I should say that I don't want to reinstall windows again and have to get a new serial number and then new serials for all my programs. So basically, what can I do with XP already installed?

you don't need new serial numbers you need new activations (usually painless and done online)

advice: do a clean install (or restore the machine to a "virgin" state using a disk image), then follow this guide...

the previously mentioned MusicXP is a GREAT resource, as well as www.theeldergeek.com

the general tips help so much to get that extra juice out of your cpu and maximize your RAM usage. The Elder Geek really helps you figure out what services you do and don't need. after optimizing my system, i shaved off about 120mb worth of unnecessary RAM usage.

MusicXP.net is good, but not as indepth as I'd like. I use Tarekith's guide, and I disable all the unnecessary services. You can find it here:

I stick to XP SP1, and my RAM usage at boot is about 120mb.

Yup, BlackViper is very good. I think Tarekith has most of his options.
