I know you've heard this before but - pops and crackles....

this is my first post and truly the last chance of getting this sorted...
The old pop and crackle problem but none of the other posts seem to offer anything that i haven't yet tried.

All drivers up to date
Abelton 5 (sometimes rewire Reason)
Running all this on a separate music partition - no internet in the background, in fact it's stripped bare
I'm getting pops and clicks when i play back my audio clips - everything started after installing the new soundcard which i bought because i heard they were reliable.
There are no IRQ conflicts, drivers are up to date, but i have to have buffer size at 1000 (ish) and it still struggles at that (in fact it doesn't get any better at the top setting). I've just spoken to a couple of friends who thought that was very high as they run their soundcards at 256. Installed a VIA driver for something to do with the motherboard after reading another link on pcaudiolabs and changed the machine from APCI to standard mode. Still not working.
It handles Midi better than audio (coming in from a microkorg) but opening a 4th clip starts all the issues - i didn't have this issue using the standard MME driver before but i needed to get some form of midi controller as drawing the notes was driving me mad. I bought 2 yamaha HS-50's so it could be that I couldn't hear the pops and clicks through the old walkman speakers i was using.
Actually played around with it again and its fine using midi only tracks - add an audio and the clicks start - CPU at 20% - 30% (although task manager puts in much higher 8 - 90)
The two audio clips in question take 2-3% of the CPU when running separately - and freezing them made them worse.
Any other suggestions - I've really run out of things to try. Am i missing somehing obvious or am i about to get into mobo/ram incompatibility.
The ram has been upgraded recently - 2 sticks of 512k/400mhz from a single 256k 266mhz.
I have heard cheap RAM can be an issue - I tried the old ram just in case but the clicks are stll there.
