To the best of my knowledge the two are exactly the same. The only difference is the price and maybe some details in the EULA.

They are exactly the same, and when the next version comes out, you are allowed to upgrade at the normal retail price, just like everyone else, and *poof*, you now have commercial license. That's what I did. Reaktor 4 edu -> Reaktor 5.
Relax. It'll work.

the only problem might be that if you're not students the sale might be prohibited, subject to the EULA. Most student licenses can only be transferred to other students.

My Ableton 5 box says educational, but I have the full version. It does not really matter what it says on the box, it is the serial number that counts. As long as your serial is not an educational then you are fine.
If your friend launches reaktor for the first time and it says "educational version" on the splash screen then I would suggest contacting NI to get it sorted.
