Hi all,

I want to add Compression to some channels but not all. If I add Compression to the Master it obviously compresses all channels, but if I send the tracks I want compressed out of Send A and add compression to Send track A, it doesn't sond the same. I am assuming this is becuase the Sends are pre-channel effect. Is that right?

if so, how do I route 4 channels with effects to a compressor to compress them all together, ahead of sending the compressed signal to Master?

create a track that you can use as a sub-group and route the audio from the channels you want into that subgroup-channel.... all this can be done in session view in the in/out section of each channel.

FYI... compression/gates/de-essers are all effects that you 'insert' into a channel, whilst others like delays/reverbs/etc.. are more often used on send channels...

I have routed the 4 channels I want to compress to an audio channel but it won't allow me to add a compressor to that channel as there is no clip in the audio channel.

How do I get around this?

You can just drag the compressor to the track it self and drop it there, you don't need to have a clips properties displayed to add it.

you're doing something wrong if you can't add fx to a group channel, ive never had any track that i cant add them too. Having clips on a channel is irrelevant to adding fx, you can add fx on empty channels.

Curious - I can now drag effects into the channel! God knows what I was trying to do before

compression can actually be used on an fx send in a wet/dry mixed type of format. a lot of the balding ponytail studio rats i know have told me about this. it's handy if you want to get a 'natural' drum sound form a mic'd kit or a breakbeat loop.

yep... i've heard this trick too... a variation on this is just for snare drum... having a natural snare, and then sending it to a channel, and compressing the absolute living hell out of it, and then adding that signal in for 'taste'.
