BCR2000 - Midi editing help

Howdy,
I've had an oberheim matrix 1000 for the past few months. Until now I've been content with finding a nice preset, sampling it into ableton and putting effects on it there, but I sat down this weekend to actually figure out how to edit the patches, and after a few hours I gave up. Here's my setup:
1. I've got a Behringer BCR2000 connected to my laptop through USB.
2. The Oberheim is connected with a midi cable from the the midi out A on the BCR.
3. The Oberheim is playing a loop sent by Ableton through the BCR.
4. I'm using U-3 mode on the BCR.
5. I select a CC parameter (say 64 - release) on the BCR (edit>twiddle knob>select midi channel>select CC number>exit)
6. Turn knob...nothing happens
I've got an access virus as well, which I tried to control also from the BCR, and couldn't get to work... so I presume it is my BCR setup that is in error...
Can someone please walk me through this? I'm totally new to midi editing and CC numbers etc...
