Is there a way of routing the audio output of any of these programs through Live (doesn't matter which OS, I have them all)? According to the specs page, I can do that with Max/MSP, but as I am a poor student I have to stick to less costly software. Does anyone have experience in using pd, jMax or SuperCollider (hm...CSound maybe?) with Live?

Not that you asked, but... You can't even do it in Max/MSP. Max/MSP can only act as a rewire master, so you can pipe Live into Max/MSP (and only as of the 2.1 beta at that), but not the other way around. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong because I would love to be able to do that.

well, in os9 you can do that (with max/msp; don't know about the rest).
there's a kind of vst plugin that comes with max/msp and is able to receive sound from within max; i think i remember that it worked with live.

I'm working in osX now for a while, and also missing this kind of stuff.
but i think there are some programs under development that will be able to deal with inter-application audio.
there's a project called "jack", that seems to work as an audio server;
multi-platform, and apparently ported to osX already.

Why in the world we don't have system level audio routing in OSX is beyond me. We can do it easy as pie with MIDI, why not audio?! We could just setup a few virtual audio ins and outs in your Audio MIDI Setup and Robert's your father's brother, innit?

Look out for Jack, coming to OS X very soon.

As far as I can tell from Developers, the mechanics underlying OS X can handle the streams, inter-app audio, no probs.

The reason they are not implemented (yet) is due to copyright issues.

But all that is needed is for a 3rd party to build the connections, the pipes are already there.

And these guys can do with all the helpful support they can get.
