The basic MIDI thing

Hi Live5 gurus-
I have Live5 running with a Tascam 428 and a Roland Fantom S88. I've been using Live for about a month so I'm still pretty unfamiliar with it.
I was using the Fantom on a couple of songs and was able to record MIDI tracks the first few weeks, but then had it out of the house on some live gigs and was working with the soft synths and samples for my most recent recording. No problems with that.
Yesterday I was trying to hook the Fantom back into Live but I'm getting no MIDI signal either in or out. The synth makes sounds and will even trigger from the computer keyboard setting-(I see the MIDI in/out signal when I do that) but I can't record MIDI tracks with the Fantom. I'm fairly certain the MIDI cables are ok, but something ain't happening.
So any ideas? I haven't found the manual too helpful in this area so far...
Is it the synth or Ableton?
One last thing-I've tried the Local Off setting on the synth....No MIDI!
