Telefon Tel Aviv tutorial movie

Hey guys, I have been using Ableton Live 5 for a couple of months now, and I recently watched all of the tutorial movies from the ableton website.
Until I stumbled on the Telefon Tel Aviv movie: http://www.ableton.com/_common/download ... l_aviv.mov

My question is: How do you do what he does in the second part of the movie (when they are outside in the park)?
He's talking about moving the looppoint for the sample in realtime.

Im sorry if this is already covered in another topic, but I used the search and didnt find anything about it.

When the clip is selected and showing in that lower properties window thing, I think he's literally just grabbing the loop bracket (the thing up above the waveform that shows what section of the clip is looping) and just sliding it around while it plays, isn't he?

he just presses the left and right cursors while in clip views.. it nudges the brackets towards the left/right without changing the length of the loop

Thanks for the reply's, I tried that and it did work pretty well. Although when I assign a midi-slider to Loop position, I can only switch between full measures (like 1 0 0 to 2 0 0), and what I'd like to be able to do is switch from 1 1 1 to 1 1 2 for example.

Also about that movie. I just watched it again a couple of times, and does he use the trick on a beat, or on something melodic?
At first I thought it was the beat, but you can hear a constant beat in the background, so Im thinking it has to be melodic.
If it is, then maybe he does it in some other way. Also:He's talking about how he made the beat, and how Charly made 'all these little design things'.
So maybe it's more complicated then we thought.

he did that beat with existing beats with siultaneous notes already. he just cut it up in to small samples using the CTRL+E function and arranged it that way.

I thought you could only use ctrl+E in the arrange window, and it looks to me like he's in session view.
It's the second part of the movie I'm after. (The first part was great too, but I know how to do that now :) ).

Anyways, anybody know a solution for this?

yeah, you have global quantize set to "bar"--try "none" or 1/32 or 1/16--this allows you to "scrub" to smaller fragments of the clip. It is okay in 5, but for me 2 and 3 (and 4 with the "ctrl" key held down) were way more musical for scrubbing. Ableton sold out to DJ's and drastically changed scrubbing in 5 with the efffin orange dot and stuff, and I'm still using 3 until they sort it out in a more sensible way. Having the scrub functionality tied to global quantize (which most all of us need set to bar) is absolutely absurd.

you can make an iac/midi loop clip that does your scrubbing and then you can scrub by even bar numbers every time. make one clip to go forwards 8 bars, one that goes forwards 16 bars, etc...

for some types of music and performance, this is a great idea. However, for scrubbing as touted by Ableton in versions 2-4, and for me personally, it is a really interesting and musical way to vary a loop. Kind of like scrathing on a turntable but different. Anyhow, for this type of scrubbing, having quantize set to "none" or 1/32 works a lot better if you are stuck with ver. 5. But as I mentioned earlier, ver 3 was the best, most musical take on scrubbing to date. Here's a live example from a peformance awhile back, check out the variations on the bass part at the beginning:

Why is scrubbing in Live 3 more musical than scrubbing in Live 5 with a smaller quantization?

I have to turn on "Ram" in order to have realtime/immediate shifts.

Definitely RAM, for sure. I guess for me scrubbing with the mouse was more musical in 3 than 5 for three major reasons:

in 3 moving the mouse with the left button held down always effected the scrubbing, in 5 you have to release the button, making it much a more complicated (and convoluted) process of clicking, unclicking, clicking...

in 3 there is no quantized "stutter" like there is in 5--in 3 the clip constantly plays forward at the tempo of the song. For me this is much more akin to scrubbing from the analog days of tape and vinyl, and to me the stuttering effect is not desirable and not musical.

in 3 there is no effing orange dot or "speaker" icon, just the playhead, which essentially is changing the start point of the loop. In 3, at any time you just drag the playhead to the far left and boom--your clip is back in its normal sync. In 5, the orange dot thing messes this up.

I appreciate that they gave up midi control over scrubbing in 5--lots of people were begging for it. I just think it is messed up because of the orange dot, scubbing tied to global quantize, and the above reasons. thats my take on it.

What is an iac? I need a another app to do this? It cannot be done within Live? Can I automate the Loop position movement?

What the heck is Josh doing in the video? It seems like he doesn't even move the Loop position but the zoomed in view is moving in the bottom of the screen? And how is the clip view flickering like that? Video manipulation or what?

I'm on PC

Yes, could you please explain precisely how to do this? I'd really appreciate that.

Also: thanks for whoever mentioned turning on the 'Ram' function. It works much better now.

Hi marine289

Are you on Win Xp? I am so here's how I did it:

I learned most of it in the 1st and 2nd view of this thread:
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... sc&start=0

Download freeware midiyoke: http://www.midiox.com/index.htm?http:// ... /myoke.htm
And install!

Do read the section called midi feedback on the site. I didn't and It made some midi loops which made my system hang.

Then make a midi setup in the preferences mid menu like the one on the picture:

http://www.thewayofapilgrim.com/ableton ... mation.png

But change the IAC Driver (bus 2) in the picture with midi yoke NT 1 since you don't have any Iac driver.

Create 1 midi track, make a midi clip, create a midi controller envelope in this clip and use whatever cc controller number you like.

Go to the audio clip that you want to use the "move loop position" with and assign the controller cc number that you used in the envelope to loop position

The flickering of the audio clip comes when you turn on the follow function

The drawback of this method is that you also move the loop position of the midi track's envelope when you edit this. Does anyone know a workaround? I do not see any.
